She is on her second round of antibiotics for pneumonia (first diagnosis 2/27/18 - second 3/20/18) and yesterday morning and this morning she seems really phlegmy. However, she is very active, has a great appetite and her gums have good color - so my question: Is it normal during recovery to for the pneumonia/phlegm to loosen up and for her to sound worse but appear better? She has a follow-up appointment on 4/2/18 for x-rays.
When we took her in (to ER for initial diagnosis and regular vet for second bout) she was obviously sick (lethargic, loss of appetite, struggles to breathe, pale gums). She also has stenotic nares and an elongated palate that we will be scheduling surgery for as soon as she has recovered from the pneumonia (per the specialist we saw).
Here is what we are doing to help her recover and reduce the likelihood of aspirating:
1. 4 small meals instead of 2
2. food is soaked/moistened and served in an elevated slow feeder
3. using a difusser with the essential oil mixture for congestion I found on this site
4. using steam from shower 2x a day
5. coupage after steaming
6. trying to limit her activity (we also have a 20 month old lab and those two can wreak havoc together so we keep them separated except for short supervised time)
7. and of course administering her antibiotics as directed
8. squirt of lemon juice as needed
Any thoughts on the phlegminess or other things we could be doing to help her?
