Need help choosing a new food for Chunky

Chunky needs a low protein dog food because he cannot process high protein dog foods says the Vet. The food they sent him home with has 2.5% crude fat, 5.5% crude fat, Fiber is 2.0% and is 74% moisture and has 494 kcal/can. When I asked how much to feed him I was told a 1/4-1/2 a can twice per day. One can of the food they sent home has less in it than the Grain Free Base Honest Kitchen food without adding your own protein

That is a huge difference from the percentages of protein, fat and fiber that is in the Fromm, Acana and Orijen foods I have given him in the past.

I am reading up on all the different foods trying to find out what I think would work and then I will talk to the vet some more. Chunky weight is normal and he is built well and I don't want him to change or be malnourished. I could understand the kidney diet for a few weeks but a lifetime of it seems extreme too me. I almost feel like they are just trying to sell me something since they havent really given me many options other than saying he need a reduced protein diet. I might as well make him a vegan going by what they sent home with him.

Agreed... research and call companies like Honest Kitchen and Fromm.. they will help you determine if their products can be used.

I just looked at fromm's website and with their canned food I would feed him 4-5 cans per day and I was told to only give him .25-.5 of one can per day with what I was given by the vet tech. I really wish the vet was there when I picked him up and I think I will go talk to them after work tomorrow.

I just called Purina and was told to feed him 2-1/3 cups per day. The sold me two cans and said to check back Wednesday. I think they realize they wont be selling me food

I was always concerned about a high protein content - just wondering how vet determined he is not processing, what were the symptoms?

I just picked Chunky up from the vet and he had Cystine Stones in his urinary tract that needed surgery to remove. He was also neutered while he was there. Some breeds of dogs get Cystine stones because they cannot process high protein content and cystine especially if they don't drink enough fluids and Chunky never has been a big drinker. I have always wet his food and give him probably 10-15 pieces of ice per day because he loves ice and wants some every time I go into the kitchen.

Thanks for the offer. I think I will go by the pet food store that I get his food at and ask the workers what they recommend one day this week since I have a few days worth of food. I was told by the vet to wean him off of his regular food so I will give him some of the Acana and the purina pro stuff they sent him home with. I wish I had another day off so I could go talk with the vet and find him something different to eat. Looking at canned foods I see none of them have near as much protein and fat as the dry food but all have more than what the Purina has.

Whatever you do, do not buy anything from the vets office like Christine said they get kick backs just like here in Canada. Senoir dog food has less protein. Orijen is verrrryyyy rich and high in protein but Acana which is the same company has a lot less protein. At the same time you are getting quality.

I personally would home cook if I were you or look up honest kitchen or go raw. Home cooking is like making an extra plate for a child. At lease you can monitor what your furball is eating. Also what a lot of people forget is they get a low protein kibble but forget to add the plant base which also has protein. Example Acana lamb n apple. It has lentils. Lentils are loaded with protein. Got to keep an eye on that if your dog needs to have less. Also they started to do cans. Just a thought

I did a little research on this and saved some links to my notes for you…read at your own pace, they're really just ones I felt may you decide on selecting the proper diet…Normally, I would be all for someone making their own dog food at home, but after all I've read w/this kind of stone and the chances of it returning…it is not the best decision unless you are very knowledgable in this type of thing - or have a specialist to consult with, like a canine nutritionist that specializes in KD.

I will read through them and hopefully understand more about what I should be feeding him. I think the vet just says this is what we provide and what you need hoping you buy what they provide. I haven't read up on much of what you provided since I have just been reading searching foods on different websites trying to compare them and see what I think will be best. Right now I am leaning towards Honest Kitchen but I am not sure whether I want to do the basic and add the meat or get one of theirs with less protein.
