hi eric my 14 wk puppy been diagnosed with suspected kc he is on morn of day 3 with tablets and syrup but it doesnt seem any better , any idea how long before should see signs of improvment ?and is there anything we can do to help

Hi Paul, I'm so sorry you're going through this with Eric. I hope he feels better soon. I don't have any personal experience with kennel cough, but this is what I found.

Treating and Preventing Kennel Cough


Although most cases of kennel cough will resolve without treatment, medications may speed recovery or minimize symptoms during the course of infection. These include antibiotics that target Bordetella bacteria and cough medicines.


You may also find that keeping your dog in a well-humidified area and using a harness instead of a collar, especially for dogs that strain against a leash, will minimize the coughing.


Most dogs with kennel cough recover completely within three weeks, though it can take up to six weeks in older dogs or those with other medical conditions. Because serious, ongoing kennel cough infection can lead to pneumonia, be sure to follow up with your veterinarian if your dog doesn't improve within the expected amount of time. Also, if your dog at any time has symptoms of rapid breathing, not eating, or listlessness, contact your vet right away, as these could be signs of more serious conditions.


There are three forms of vaccine for kennel cough: one that is injected, one that is delivered as a nasal mist, and one that can be given by mouth. Although these vaccines may help, they do not guarantee protection against kennel cough or infectious tracheobronchitis because it can be caused by so many different kinds of bacteria and viruses. Also, it is important to realize that neither form of the kennel cough vaccination will treat active infections.




The intranasal and oral kennel cough vaccinations are typically given to dogs once a year, but sometimes are recommended every six months for dogs at high risk for kennel cough. These forms of the vaccine tendto provide dogs protection against kennel cough sooner than the injected product.

yes thanks ,he is on a anti biotic tablet course and liquid for a week ,he is happy in himself and eating and drinking but just worry for him ,and wondered if there was anything else i could do to speed up process

Poor guy It helps a lot if he's sounding congested to run the shower at super hot and keep the door closed and let him breath the steam. Breaks up all the phlegm and is easier to breathe. 3 or 4 times a day. Please keep us posted.

It can take between 3-6 weeks for it to completely clear up.

Everyone's already given good advice, so I just want to remind you to keep him away from other dogs. Kennel cough, aka Bordetella is extremely contagious. If an older dog catches it, or one with a compromised immune system, it can turn into something much more serious.

ok thanks ,he seems a little better this morn still very sniffley but hasnt been coughing as much hopefully the tablets and syrup may be kicking in....i will keep you posted

well eric still weasing not as bad but his medication finishes today so think he is gonna have to go bk to vets

Tyson developed KC after we got him. It took a whole month for it to be totally gone. The vet ended up having to give him a cough suppressant in pill form in addition to the antibiotics. We ended up having to try a different antibiotic after the first round. Hope your pup is all better soon.

been bk the vet reckons its the breed its them grunting they even asked the main vet who agreed the kennel cough was nearly gone and the grunting coughing was the breed type .....unbelievable ,so more antibiotics so totally dislusioned with vet now
