Furminator on puppy

My ace is shedding quite a bit, and I'm suspecting it's new coat coming in. He stopped with the dry/flaky skin. His hair is still silky soft. Was wondering if the furminator or other similar products are ok to use on him at 17 weeks of age. I used to use a shedding rake on my previous doggy, but I think that's a bit too harsh on his skin. I've also see other preducts similar to furminator at Walmart that state they are superior. I also use the kong rubber brush and slick brush on a daily basis. Thanks for any input.

We use the furminator and the Kong zoom groom. You can use the furminator on him, there's one up in the auction.
