Excessive runny eyes

Our 5 month old pup, Rooney (on the right in the pic), is very wrinkley and has saggy eyes. Her eyes run a bunch more than her sister, Kenzie. On a daily basis we clean both of their wrinkles with a wet baby wipe and we put corn starch in Rooney's wrinkles to help keep them dry. The last 24 hours or so, her eyes have been extremely runny, where her wrinkles are just soaked when we wake up. Any suggestions?do we need to go see a vet or could it just be teether, normal allergy? Would love any suggestions. Our last bully did not have any eye problems.

It could be from teething, or possibly allergies, but I would have them looked at when you go to the vet next to see if there is any hairs rubbing her eyes, just to be sure. You may want to use diaper rash ointment in the wrinkle (clean and dry well first) so it doesn't get too irritated and keep the moisture away. I've heard that cornstarch can actually feed the yeast since it's a food if used alone without any other medication mixed in with it.

Rooney is a cutie and looks like she has ectropion. Ectropion is when the lower lids roll outward, giving a droopy appearance and allowing the conjunctive tissue to be visible. It is the opposite of entropion, where the lid turns inward. Either can be corrected by surgery, but in instances of ectropion, where no hair is scraping against the eye ball, surgery is usually not necessary. My Lola has the same problem and we have the same runny eyes constantly. It never goes away and gets much worse with allergies. Have you tried giving a zyrtec or claritin daily? It may help the excessive tears but with ectropion eyes, I am afraid you will never be able to keep them completely dry because the lid is so loose. My vet recommended to flush with saline solution (the eye rinse kind, not the one for contacts) after prolonged outings outdoors to remove pollens or other allergens that get trapped in there. Another thing to remember is to make sure the wet area around the eye does not start to be a breeding ground for yeast and bacteria. My vet said that chlorohexidine is safe to use around the eyes and is readily available without prescription.
Anyway, thats my two cents. If anyone else knows a better way to keep the eyes dry please let us know. I hate that Lola has wet folds all the time.

That's all really helpful, thank you. I had not heard of that and it totally makes sense. Her eyes are sooo droopy. Our vet has talked to us about a "lift" of sorts to help correct her droopy eyes. We're really considering it, it seems like her eyes may not even shut all the way when she sleeps. And I'm not sure if we'll be able to keep up with all this moisture. We may have to clean several times a day and I don't want to rub her poor wrinkles raw.

Is it that bad? I'm so sorry. Its a relatively easy surgery fro what I understand. The only thing you have to think about is that if it is not done precisely by a very practiced surgeon, it can change the shape of the eye and make it look weird. I'm not sure what part of the country you are in but here in the SF Bay area, the optical specialist veterinarians charge about $2000 per eye. My regular vet says he does it all the time and costs much less. The best time to do it is when she is already having another surgery like a spay just before a year old. They may not do it while she is still growing. Let me know if you decide to do it an it works out.

Our boy has had this surgery twice for rolling lids.It wasn't very costly here in Arkansas around 150 per eye.His lashes were rubbing and he was getting irritation from debris.Hope this helps.
