Dudley's having Cruciate Surgery

Dudley decided to go completely mental while out with his dog walker and six other dogs over did it and ended up that evening with a bad limp (this was 9 weeks ago) been to two different vets, the second one is a fantastic Bulldog specialist who took X-rays and confirmed what we thought. We took him back two later and he had improved immensely the vet was very impressed and said lets just steadily build up his exercise and see how he goes but would probably need an operation in the future.
Well! trying to tell Dudley to take it easy didn't go well, we bumped into his dog walker in the woods this week, Duds went mental leaping off the ground and hey presto that night back to leg lifting and limping
So we have just been on the phone to the Bully specialist and looks like he's going for surgery in two weeks time, needless to say were both (mum and dad) in bits at the thought of surgery but he's just too active and young to not do it. We have tried the wrapping him in cotton wool and hope he doesn't do anything silly method and it didn't work, we were just kidding ourselves and trying not to have surgery. We need him back to himself and to be able to go to the beach with him again.
I know many of you have gone through the same thing and was just wondering how it went, how was the recovery and how are they now

Im hoping I’m not going to go through that with Duke.. I sure get it when you say “goes mental”. Got The dogs new collars, Duke’s is a Superman collar. Sure suites him lol...

Sorry to hear this. Our American Bulldog had it done on both her back legs, 18 months apart. She was just fine afterwards, you couldn't tell she had surgery.

I think the recovery is a long period of keeping them confined.

We've been through this a few times and all surgeries were successful. It is extremely important to follow through with crate rest. Nobody will like the weeks of confinement but if you want successful post OP healing it's absolutely necessary. If he's not used to a crate now then I highly recommend that you get him one and get him used to it ASAP. Good luck with the surgery. Please keep us posted on how things go.

So so sorry to hear he will need the surgery.... we been through two and they hardest part is the recovery and keeping them calm. We opted to empty a small bedroom and place a mattress on the floor. This way we each spent time in the room and he could move around but could not jump on or off anything. We carried him up/down any stairs and all activities were leashed. Our healthy girl at the time went to daycare daily to keep her tired and leaving her recovering brother alone

Thank's so much everyone for your comments, we have done a lot of research ( as we all do) and as you have all said, its all about the rehab and as it happens we ( mum and dad ) have both been made redundant from work, which we both hated but we are seeing it as a plus now because we dont have to leave our little man alone while we go to work. We already have a mattress sorted so one of us will be sleeping downstairs with him and he wont need to be left in a crate. The hardest part will be not having anyone coming round to see him! Thats when he goes mental. We now have a date for Dudleys sergery its next Wednesday he stays in overnight and we pick him up the following afternoon.

Thanks everyone for your advice and thoughts, we drop Dudley off tomorrow morning and pick him up the following afternoon! needless to say both me and his mum are just dreading it now but we need to get past tomorrow and get our poor little boy back up to full speed. He's been very sad these last few weeks because we have been unable to take him anywhere.
