Dry eyes....

Vet diagnosed him with dry eyes, and prescribed major with cyclosporine 0.1%, besides that what else can you do for the pup? Thank guys.

Now this is MY opinion, I would do the CS first see how that goes first on my 2 dogs...again that’s my 2 cents.

The most common side effect of cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion is a temporary burning sensation in the eye. Other side effects include:

eye redness,
discharge,
watery eyes,
eye pain,
foreign body sensation,
itching,
stinging, and
blurred vision.

I have Monty on Tacrolimus. The vet first prescribed cyclosporine ointment for him but it was expensive for a tiny little tube and I wasted half of it trying to get it in his eyes. He does not cooperate! After that, he prescribed the Tacrolimus and that was a battle too as even though it was drops, it was thick and by the time it had dropped, his eye was firmly shut again. Aargh! After a couple of years of that, I took him to an eye specialist and he gave him a thinner Tacrolimus, SUCCESS! It is not cheap either but lasts much longer than either the tube or drops of cyclosporin.

I wouldn't go stronger unless absolutely necessary and only if prescribed. I prefer the Tacrolimus as there are no side effects. I said it wasn't cheap either but I was wrong. After thinking about it I looked at the receipt and it was $49 but it lasts a few months.

We have a dog in our large circle that is on Tacrolimus and between doses he gets artificial tears, when needed...especially during allergy season. It does help. However, before adding any other med(even OTC) I would ask the Vet.
Keeping the area around the eyes clean with a warm wet cloth is helpful too.

I did try cyclosporine and tacrolimus , but still cant keep his eyes discharge down, I have to clean his eyes out atleast every 2-3 hours or so...anyone deal w this before? TIA.

It is a lifetime problem. We wash Monty's eyes with a sterile eye-wash to clear away the gunk and use the Tacrolimus. We eventually went to an eye specialist and he also prescribed NeoPolyDex but that is ONLY for when his eyes get inflamed, not for everyday use.

Dogs need higher doses of cyclosporin eye drops than humans for keratoconjunctivits sicca, so while cyclosporin for humans is 0.05%, the percentage for dogs is 0.5-2% drops or 0.2% ointment. If after no response in 3-6 weeks, then vet can switch to 2% cyclosporin eye drops or to tacrolimus drops or ointment.

I wouldn't use colloidal silver to treat a condition like keratoconjunctivitis sicca, assuming that's what he has, but it's probably great for the start of an eye infection in a dog with it.

Hey,

My dog Tank was prescribed with a 2% of cyclosporine ointment because of constant eye infections. His eyes seem really swollen now however. Has anyone experienced this before? Could the dosage they prescribed us be too high? Trying to avoid another $300 vet bill but Tank's health comes first.
