Bumps

What I thought was that ace was blowing out a new coat up until a couple of days ago. He continues to shed, but now I noticed small bumps on his skin. They tend to get a bit larger when I brush him at night. Can this be an allergy he is developing/developed? I've had him on Fromm puppy gold for about 1 month. Slowly he started shedding more and more. His eyes don't tear much at all compared to the pro plan he was on. His coat still feels fairly soft, although my wife did mention today that it seemed stiffer/rough. He's also on grizzly salmon oil 1 pump per day and Nuvet Plus 1 wafer. Bumps are not flaky. He does have some dandruff though. Any ideas?

How long does it take for new coat to finish coming in and how could I tell its new coat?

How old is he now and is he still on the puppy gold?

I never really paid attention to how long it takes to blow the new coat in.... I now they are all different as my two have not yet started.

He's 19 weeks. He is still on puppy gold. This morning the bumps feel much less. I think they get inflamed when I comb him with the slicker

It would be great if you could get a picture? Bella would do this sometimes as well, and I noticed more running along her back… she would also get seasonal alopecia.

I'll try to get pics, but I don't think it would be much help cause you really can't see them, only feel them. Right now I can't feel much, only a couple. I'm gonna brush him in a bit and see if that makes them rise. If it's a food allergy, I just ordered a new bag from pet flow . I'm thinking of going grain free with beef frittata. We will see.

Bumps have not showed up! although flakiness has come back with a vengeance with dry skin. If I pinch skin i can see flakes arise easily. I'm switching to Fromms beef frittata to see if this makes a difference. Vet keeps trying to push royal canin. I tried showing him the comparison of Fromms puppy gold and Fromms beef frittata and he seems to just brush it off and say 90% of his bulldog clients are doing great on royal canin. Although, he did mention to let him know how he does on beef frittata so he could keep Fromms in mind. Science diet and royal canin pusher, go figure, typical vet.

Does his coat look "messy"? Like not totally flat against his skin? If that's what you're seeing, it's most likely hives.

Yes, a couple of bumps would make his fur stand up. I remember one of my pit bulls got into an ant pile and got a bunch of bumps due to ant bites. You could clearly see the hives all over. But I'm thinking ace is not doing well with the chicken/or rice. I have also seen him rubbing his eye with his paw and sometimes putting his head on his bead like an ostrich trying to scratch it. Lol. Signs of allergies. My vet said it probably wasn't. But didn't give me another options. Hopefully I see a plus with the food change. His fur has been gradually getting rough, where about 1 month ago it was silk smooth.

@AceTheBathound Blue also gets only a few here and there. I use Claritin (10mg reditabs for a 60lb bulldog. A puppy wouldn't need more than 5mg probably, the unflavored ones) and it clears his hives up.

It could be the food. How long have you had him on it? If he's close to 6 months, I'd just wait and then switch him to a grain free adult formula. Switching causes it's own issues, and it can take up to a month to see results. So not sure if it's really worth it if you're going to be switching him to an adult food soon anyway.

If you bath him more than every other week try going to once a month. My bullies didn't do well on the salmon oil, do we took them off it. Plus I wouldn't brush him for a few days to see if that helps. We use the Kong Zoom Groom to brush ours when they are blowing their coat and they love it.

[MENTION=2071]Davidh[/MENTION], ahh, never thought about the grizzly salmon oil, which is what I introduced to him at the time of switching his food from proplan to Fromms puppy gold. I also use the kong zoom groom and the furgopet (similar to furminator but no blades). I bathe him every 3 weeks. Can salmon oil actually make his skin dry? I'm gonna stop it and see what happens.

I switched June to the Beef Frittata from the puppy gold at about 5 months because her tear stains were bad. Thought maybe the grain free would help her and it did drastically! Hopefully that's all you need I don't use salmon oil so no input on that. We have since switched to the Surf and Turf flavor which she really likes as well.

Update: I have stopped the Salmon Oil and Nuvet Plus supplements to rule them out while going through a switch from Puppy gold to Fromms Beef Frittata. We will see in about 1 month if his shedding reduces. I want to say it has, but I think I'm being biased due to the "grain free" food

Stop brushing him. This happened to lola. Her skin is sensitive due to allergies and every time I brushed her it would irritate her and the bumps would appear. I thought they were hives. It was always worse after brushing and one time after I used the fulminator i could see the bumps raised in the tracks of the brush. The bumps turned into a staph infection that I had to treat with antibiotics. The vet said not to brush her anymore as her skin could not take it. The allergies made her skin this way but when I stopped brushing it certainly reduced the bumps by 80%. I now get all her loose hair off in her bi-weekly bath.
You can try giving a zyretc or claritin once a day to see if it helps keep the skin from becoming inflamed and sensitive.

Thanks! Actually, no more bumps. I'm using the kong zoom groom as it is very gentle on their skin due to it being rubber. I'm just hoping the shedding reduces cause if I'm wearing black and carry him, oh my, am I in for some serious lint roller action, lol
