hello everyone...how many of you spayed and neutered your bully's?? I am scared to death knowing that this breed doesn't do well with anestesia..but Lucy is a humper!!...she even does the jaw chatter thing so I think she needs to be spayed asap HAHA but it terrifies me...

As long as you use a good bully vet, she should be fine. Don't take her to one of the cheap places, you don't know what might happen. We have had several bullies done with no problems, except Lucy, who had a bleed after the surgery, but the vet caught it before we took her home and did another surgery on her to fix the problem. Our vet always keeps the girls overnight to monitor them, and he always makes sure they eat a meal and keeps it down, before they go.

Guinevere just got spayed on the 3rd. She did great during the surgery. Our only problem has been trying to keep her calm so she can heal. She wants to play!

We've done both of ours, just use a good vet not a humane society or something like that. If they offer "vouchers" for low cost stay away!! Not saying they are not good, just probably won't have the special equipment that may be needed for a bulldog.

I had Hannah spayed in Nov. she did fine. Since then she has had 2 eye surgeries which when well also. No problems. I agree just find a bully vet.

I agree. They have so many dogs to do on their spay days they can use the wrong stuff. Also, the place here uses volunteers for a lot of stuff and they wouldn't know a bully's special needs.

I had my female Blossom spayed 3 months ago at the age of 7 months, as well as repaired her cherry eye at the same time, then a week after the surgery, the other eye developed cherry eye, and I fixed it 3 weeks later and, she did very well with both surgeies, then I neutered her brother a week later, he also did excellent. The hardest part is keeping them quiet and not jumping post surgery. They just wanted to play, you wouldn't have known they had surgeries. The good reasons to do the surgeries is that the risk for cancers, especially in females from breast and uterine cancers is less when they are spayed, and with each heat they go into, the risk increases, this is only true if you do not breed her, because of the hormones during heats. The male also has less of a risk for testicular cancer, as well as my Dozer really calmed down after his neuter and he doesn't hump us anymore. Also when they are fixed, there is less risk of them roaming or running away when they are in heat. So unless you are planning to breed your pet the pros far out way the cons for the surgeries.

Most of us held our breath and there are lots of prayers with each surgery. Miss Tallulah has been through 2 surgeries in the last 6 months. It is never easy but it is the most loving thing you can do if you don't plan on breeding. [MENTION=6311]Vikinggirl[/MENTION] is spot on with the risks of not spaying and not breeding your girl. But having a good Bully vet ensures your little Bully Lucy lou will come through safe and sound. You will probably be a bit of a wreck if you like the majority of us bully momas and papas because you love her so much but then it will be over and your biggest challenge will be to keep her calm and let her heal.

I know that it is so scary when you think of having them spayed/neutered and the risks involved. But you also have to look at the risks of cancer that increase if they are NOT spayed!

In the end it will be fine ... just find a vet who you trust and who uses ISO to put them to sleep during the op!!

I was a MESS when Matilda was spayed, but she goes to Dr Kraemer in Santa Ana, CA. He is WONDERFUL. Find an English bulldog specialist and you'll have nothing to worry about. The actual surgery is no big deal... it's the anesthesia that's the scary part. But as long as your vet knows the breed, you won't have a problem! Matilda was back to normal the next day, AND had her nostrils opened up (they were collapsing) at the same time!

We haven't neutered our boy yet. My husband and I see differently on the subject. I say if he's not going to use them then we should. He thinks its cruel.

Im a little confused now. Meeko will soon be 7months and im sure i read its best for their growth to wait until hes older when we get him done? Is this true or false .. If it doesnt make a difference il get him done now so we dont have to worry when my sisters female husky is in her first heat cycle before she gets spayed. Meeko doesnt hump so i dont think he will calm down in any way after neutering x

We have 3 bulldogs, Joey has been spayed and she's had two operations to sort out her hip dysplasia. Boeboe has been spayed and she's had 5 operations due to her eye lashes scratching the eye. Bennie has been neutered so between our 3 bulldogs they've been under 10 times. I was a nervous wreck and felt horrible every time but they all did very good and there were no problems or complications
