Hi ya’ll haven’t been around in a bit … just life. My wife took Winston in to see a specialist regarding soft palate surgery as she felt he was out of breath too easy and panting excessively they did recommend soft palate surgery and enlarging the nares he goes in Wednesday. Anybody have experience with this, What should I expect afterwards? Nervous Dad ; )

Hey there! I’ve been through this several times with a few of our bulldogs and recently with our rescue girl, Eleanor.

Two of our other bulldogs and our French bulldog went through the surgery a number of times without any issues. Our French bulldog Chelios needed the surgery a few times due to issues from barking and his nares just seemed to need more work to them, but his recovery was always very easy.

You’ll want to feed soft food for a few days so boiled meat and maybe egg noodles or rice just to make it easy for them to swallow and not have to chew. You’ll want to keep eye on how they’re breathing, use a vaporizer or steam bathes if mucus builds up when and keep him calm.

Our rescue girl, Eleanor, who just had this procedure done about a month ago. It was the first time we went through a rough recovery. Her nares were constantly blocking up filling with mucus and some of her tissue was growing back so we had to go back to the vet to have her nostrils cleared. Due to all this she did develop pneumonia, but we caught it so early that it really didn’t impact her. We just had to put her on a stronger antibiotic to clear it all up. A good recovery should be a week tops maybe two, but Eleanorā€˜s was almost 3 to 4 weeks mostly due to the issue with her nares, our Vet thinks she may have had a reaction to the laser he used to wide in the nares.

You know your baby best so keep an eye on their breathing and their behavior if they’re not eating or become lethargic get back to the vet and have him checked, but overall, this is usually a very easy procedure to recover from

Sending lots of prayers and hugs for a successful procedure and a quick recovery
