Hi ya’ll haven’t been around in a bit … just life. My wife took Winston in to see a specialist regarding soft palate surgery as she felt he was out of breath too easy and panting excessively they did recommend soft palate surgery and enlarging the nares he goes in Wednesday. Anybody have experience with this, What should I expect afterwards? Nervous Dad ; )

Hey there! I’ve been through this several times with a few of our bulldogs and recently with our rescue girl, Eleanor.

Two of our other bulldogs and our French bulldog went through the surgery a number of times without any issues. Our French bulldog Chelios needed the surgery a few times due to issues from barking and his nares just seemed to need more work to them, but his recovery was always very easy.

You’ll want to feed soft food for a few days so boiled meat and maybe egg noodles or rice just to make it easy for them to swallow and not have to chew. You’ll want to keep eye on how they’re breathing, use a vaporizer or steam bathes if mucus builds up when and keep him calm.

Our rescue girl, Eleanor, who just had this procedure done about a month ago. It was the first time we went through a rough recovery. Her nares were constantly blocking up filling with mucus and some of her tissue was growing back so we had to go back to the vet to have her nostrils cleared. Due to all this she did develop pneumonia, but we caught it so early that it really didn’t impact her. We just had to put her on a stronger antibiotic to clear it all up. A good recovery should be a week tops maybe two, but Eleanor‘s was almost 3 to 4 weeks mostly due to the issue with her nares, our Vet thinks she may have had a reaction to the laser he used to wide in the nares.

You know your baby best so keep an eye on their breathing and their behavior if they’re not eating or become lethargic get back to the vet and have him checked, but overall, this is usually a very easy procedure to recover from

Sending lots of prayers and hugs for a successful procedure and a quick recovery

Bless your heart ! I feel better already ; ) I think my anxiety was when I google this they always show dogs really struggling to breath snorting etc Wintz does none of that just gets out of breath easy and pants excessively . As a result my wife is too afraid to allow him to do anything walk play etc she’s so worried that he could be harmed in a big way, so all in all hoping this gives him a better life. What was the cost of your procedures here in Portland it’s 7k including hospital after care etc. .. thanks for chiming in my wife dirs a great job crossing t’s and dotting i’s so I always trust her judgement .. thanks again !

Just keep close watch for any out of normal behavior or breathing. First day home he may just want to sleep but pay attention and call or get to vet … no question should go unanswered.

Winston’s had surgery today we were told his pallet was very long and thick it was reduced and his tonsils taken. His nares were enlarged. This afternoon he’s being removed from the oxygen bed as he’s breathing on his own without tube and his blood shows 100% oxygen great sign . They say he’s woozy but charming and doing well .. will update when he’s home

By any chance, did you have his trachea x-rayed? Some have narrow tracheas which can cause breathing issues.

I really wouldn't have it done. Unless it's life threatening. My Sid had it done at a year old and now he's 5 and I'm at the vets at least twice a year for extreme breathing difficulties. The surgery as far as I'm concerned doesn't work. What needs to happen is they breeders put two dogs together that have good breathing. It's not rocket science and we need to keep breeds as near to original as possible. Tricolour etc needs to be stopped. ( Blue, Black and tan) Introducing these colours has severely weakened an already weak breathing dog. I blame the Kennel club here and America for allowing such changes in all thorough breeds. It's cruelty and I hate seeing my pal in such discomfort. Purchase traditional colours and stop this practice for the good of the breed.

Somebody got his cone off today and is very happy about it lol my boy is going nuts with JOY
