I get that all the time!!! I do find it terribly off putting!

I always just tell them "nothing compared to the vet bills coming up in the near future."

They usually go on about how cute she is after that.

Hi! I was very surprised to read that you guys get the same question in the US as I get in Argentina!!

I've found the best answer ever: "IT WAS A GIFT, so I can't tell you really how much". It has worked really well for me as I feel very uncomfortable too!!!
