So we all just got home and here is the update:

So again, we did not get any X-Rays but we did infact have a great vet. So what we know is Jovi for sure has a ruptured ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) in her right leg. The vet found that out just by examining her leg because it was THAT bad. Also, she checked her left leg and feels signs of it but is not positive if its in that leg aswell and would only be able to find that out with X-Rays. And reason we did not agree for the X-Rays to be done was we did not want Jovi to get anesthesia twice, and the vet recommended aswell to only get it the day of surgery because she already knows for a fact the right leg needs it. Also, we have to go see an orthopedic specialist within 3 weeks to get this done, she suggests this because if we wait any longer she could get severe arthritis and would DEFINITELY get it in her left leg aswell. Also, the $1200 that we were quoted per leg was wayyyy off as apparently we took her to an animal hospital that was not even board certified for it. And the actually cost per leg would be a MINIMUM of $2500, so we are looking at a HUGE vet bill in the next couple of weeks to add on to what has already been spent. We are starting a Go Fund Me account so I am hoping I can get a little help with that. But I am so depressed about this. I feel so bad for her and te pain she is in.

I am so sorry to hear that Jovi is hurt. I know exactly how you are feeling and I am going through this experience myself with Jewel. I tagged you on a couple of threads that has discussions on bad knees. Prayers and positive thoughts your way.

@xxaprilrose so sorry to hear about the diagnosis. My baby already had 3 ACL surgeries and we have the possibility of a 4th as of this Tuesday. She started limping again and I have a feeling that her right knee thread might come lose from the first surgery back on December.

Which ACL procedure did you opt for? We did the thread one, least evasive but now I am wondering if the metal plate option would had been better considering that my baby is VERY active. How much does Jovi weight?

Well, at least ACL is fixable. Something that will take some patience from your part and also Jovi to through the recovery but once all done she will be like brand new!

I have our vet appointment tomorrow... so I will share updates.

We are not making the appointment until next week when we get paid. Jovi weighs 41.2 lbs, but I think she lost a little weight as she has not been eating much. She is VERY active though when she is not like this, does this mean that she will need to have the surgery more throughout her life?! :[

Oh no, it depends. I heard many dogs here that had the surgery once and it worked, I also read stories that the other leg went bad and needed surgery after... and stories like mine where they needed to do the surgery twice.

There are 3 different procedures and since Jovi is small and only weight 40+lbs (like Izzy) they might opt for just adding a thread (almost like a fishing line) as an reinforcement for the ligament. This surgery should not cost you more than $1200-1500. The other procedures are more expensive.... and more evasive too and usually recommended for larger breeds such as boxers and labs.

I would visit with you vet and see what they recommend for Jovi.... for now just keep her quiet as much as possible and let her rest. The more she uses the other leg the higher the chances the other ACL might rupture too.....

How active is Jovi? Izzy is super active, has no breathing issue so she can keep up with all the dogs at the dog park. She is usually the first one start playing during our meet ups and last one to stop!

yeah jovi is the same way and super active. shes able to keep up with my moms german shepherd that is 10 months old.... the vet said her leg is completely done for though so she needs the surgery done and she would be surprised if they charged anything less than 2500 on the leg.

Hmmm.. I wonder if they are quoting you on 2500 is because they are suggesting a bone altering surgery. Keep me posted!

ACL in dogs is quite common... I learned that after I went through this process with Izzy and started digging into some old threads here and reading on different websites. I think specially if you have an active dog....


Also, after Izzy partially rupture her ACL it took me almost 3 weeks until I schedule the surgery because I wanted to give her enough time and rest to see if things would get better on its own. I kept her calm and with minimum walk, added all the recommended vitamins and supplements to her diet.... so my advice to you is take your time finding a vet that you trust and also being 100% sure about the route to take as far as the procedure. This is not an "emergency procedure". I know that your baby is in pain and has difficulty walking but find a good doctor and the recovery road will be hardest part.
