So the other day watson was limping a bit so i brought him to 24 hour hospital and they suspected a slipped disc...hes been on prednisone and gabapentin since and weening off..looks to be 100% maybe 90% at worst right now. Upon doing xray at the hospital the vet told me he has severe hip dysplasia. Hes 5 years old and ive never seen signs of him in pain. I scheduled appt for orthopedist specialist next week. I give him omega fatty acids and cosequin each morning with breakfast since he was a puppy. He runs around shows no signs of pain etc etc yet the xray shows bad HD. Is this somthing that doesnt need to be addressed until he shows signs of pain?

Poor boy. I don’t have much experience with hip dysplasia but bulldogs are notorious for not showing signs of pain and very stoic. I would address it now before it gets worse and the pain by then may be unmanageable.

Lots of love and hugs to you [emoji3590][emoji3590][emoji3590]

Agree with [MENTION=9205]JennieS[/MENTION]...bulldogs don’t always show when they’re in pain . It’s good that you are seeing a specialist next week. Keep us posted!

Have him evaluated by an orthopedic specialist...he may be a candidate for FHO surgery. We have done many of these surgeries and have had fabulous results in every instance.

In Finland hips are marked from A-E. B already being hipdysplasia. So can you post us the X-rays, please. Bulldogs can do fine even with E if their muscle contition is good.

The xrays are on a cd not sure how id post but im pretty dure hed be on the lower end. He doednt show any signs of pain, he bunny hops on occassion a little clicking but looks good otherwise. I have an appt with chief if staff at long island vet specialist on long island tuesday. Praying he says yea hes got it but he looks good range of motion wise and seems strong. If not il have a decision to make because i really dont want to put him under and these hip surgeries sound pretty serious.

Thats him currently just hanging out....my regular vet says all of his actions youd never think he has HD but the xrays dont lie

If he shows no sign of symptoms just let it be and take care of his muscle condition. Balanced diet, joint supplements and exercise will be enough to keep him going.

He looked worse than the severe...there were xrays posted by another user that looked very similar to what watson has...i give him omega 3 and cosequin each morning (just bought dasequin will use that over cos) ranges between 45-50lbs so hes pretty trim. I just hope the orthopedist doesnt try and do a cash grab and say lets do surgery now because god forbid somthing happens when he showed no signs of pain

you said the xrays on CD... save them to your computer then attach here as a photo.

keep us posted and remember if you are not happy with the info, it never hurts to get a second opinion

I have a macbook with no cd slot... ill see if i can get somone to upload it tho... and if he recomends surgery im definitly getting 2nd and 3rd opinions.

So we just got back from vet..the surgeon doesnt recomend surgery for the hip dysplasia just because of the breed and his hips being somewhat typical...he did say he recomends doing the luxating patella surgery on his left leg...anyone have any experience with that?
