Help Needed! Help with food change

Hello I am a first time english bulldog mommy and I have a 1 year old bulldog named Diesel. Diesel has been on Royal Canin sine he was able to eat kibble . He has allergies and is beginning to get yeasty in his paws, I took him the vet and she recommended a food change or allergy medications. I told her I would think about it and after a lot of thinking and researching I have decided to change his kibble, as I prefer to keep him off of medications if at all possible. I have decided on a grain free food either Blue Buffalo or Natures Variety and am looking on some feedback on both foods. Also upon researching here on the website I know that the transition to the new food will not be easy on him, so I would also like to know how much I should be introducing to his current food before the full transition.

Hi and welcome to you and Diesel to EBN. I'm so glad you joined us. I'm going to copy a post from another member Sherry on how to do the transition from one food to another brand.

Change over slowly starting with 1/4 new food mixed with 3/4 of old food with one tablespoon of canned plain pumpkin daily. after 3 days add a bit more of the new food to his diet. the changeover should take about 2 to 2-1/2 weeks even as much as 3 weeks . if he gets runny stool, back off a bit on the amount of new food.
He's ready for adult food. I feed my pack Fromm Pork and peas, they are all doing very well on it

My two guys were also on Royal Canin from the breeder, and I knew it wasn't the best food, so I started doing research on dog food and nutrition, which is how I found this site. As it turned out my female Blossom has many allergies as well, she is allergic to chicken, which is a common one for bulldogs, salmon, grains and corn. We switched their foods 4 times until we found one that both Blossom and Bulldozer tolerated. We switched to Fromm's Beef Frittata, and they have been on this food for over a year, and are both doing very well on it. You can read the dog food ratings forum on this site, to see the different brands of food. You want to feed a brand that is rated a 4 Star or better. Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Orijen, and Fromm's are examples of this. You made a great choice in trying a change of food over medication, as this will be better for Diesel in the long run. There are some natural supplements that you can give him to help him with allergies and immune system as well. We add 2 Tbsp. of plain unsweetened yogurt to their morning kibble, this is excellent for the probiotics, which boosts both the immune system and digestion, we also add 1 Tbsp. of salmon oil for the Omega Oils, to their evening kibble, which is good for the brain, their skin, and their coats, and we add 1 Tbsp. of apple cider vinegar to their drinking water everyday, there are a lot of benefits to apple cider such as its a natural anti inflammatory, it balances the Ph levels of the blood, and it kills the bad bacteria in the body, so it boosts the immune system, which helps fight allergies.

Apple Cider Vinegar


Apple cider is known around the world as Mother Nature’s miracle medicine, a powerful weapon in the war against aging and disease that is more effective than many high-priced prescription drugs. When God created this fruit He designed it be a food and a medicine!
Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is golden liquid concentrated with the healthy goodness of apples. It contains more than 30 important nutrients, 12 minerals, over 6 vitamins, essential acids and several enzymes. Moreover, it has a large dose of pectin for a healthy heart, and thus, healthy as a whole.
Many vitamins, minerals and other nutrients and substances are available in ACV to improve the health of your dog. ACV can provide them with enzymes and important minerals, such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, chlorine,

Our bullie had loose bowels on blue buffalo. I changed his food to acana and issue went away. I gave him a few pieces of the remaining blue buffalo as a treat and loose bowels came back.

Charley only gets 1 cup food twice a day, so it isn't as expensive as it seems.
