at the shelter when we picked up our new family member (bulldog), one staffer at shelter really was insistent that we should use a harness rather than collar. Our trainer (who the new dog will meet soon!) says for bulldogs, harness puts to much stress on their joints, to use a collar, and also is a believer (as are we) in using stimulation collars (we use one with our current dog, with very good success). I know bulldogs have breathing issues, in the current heat, victoria pants nearly our entire walk. But if you train them not to strain at the lead, I don't think a properly adjusted collar should be an issue.
