I wrote this in memory of my sweet Abby who died at 10 months and 2 days of age. I was out on the patio playing my guitar while Abby and her sister, Lily, rolled around on the grass and chased about. After a while, I opened the back door and called them in. Lily ran in first. Abby walked in, and fell dead on the floor about two steps past the threshold. She hadn't been sick, and seemed vigorous and healthy right to the end. She didn't make a sound or twitch a muscle. She was just gone. I miss her every day.
Abby
When Abby was a baby
She'd stand on my foot
She'd crawl up in my lap
If I'd read her a book
She'd peek 'round a corner
Giving me her silly look
When Abby was a baby
She'd stand on my foot
Her tail was a wonder
As it whirled round and round
Had it been a propeller
She'd have surely left the ground
She'd leave a ball alone
But took every disk she found
Her tail was a wonder
As it whirled round and round
On her head was a thumbprint
Reddish brown on pure white
Her ears were long and soft
And never stood upright
Her tongue was always out
And her eye's were always bright
On her head was a thumbprint
Reddish brown on pure white
Then one day up in Heaven
God ordered a report
And when it was completed
They were one Bulldog short
An urgent call went out
To find a Bulldog for the Lord
Abby heard the call that day
and went to her reward.
She left us in a hurry
No time to say goodbye
No time to say "I love you girl"
No time to sit and cry
One moment she was with us
The next she was with God
I only hoped that when they'd meet
She'd stand upon His feet.
When Abby was a baby
She'd stand on my foot
She'd crawl up in my lap
If I'd read her a book
She'd peek 'round a corner
Giving me her silly look
When Abby was a baby
She'd stand on my foot.
