it was as beautiful as any February day could be, but WOW that water was frigid. It didn't deter either pup and they played til they were worn out. Only bad part about that trip was the 32' Humpback Whale that had washed ashore earlier that morning. The stranding team had arrived and were preparing to do a necropsy. However, IMO, it was quite evident that this whale had been hit by a ship prop. It looked to be in great shape except for the 3 very distinct cuts along "his" back. I'm sure that death came quickly. Humpbacks are really cool and I hated seeing one of these fabulous creatures lying on the beach...very sad indeed.

The day was really nice otherwise.

oscarmayer GREAT photos as usual! How heartbreaking about the whale though, something so majestic.......

Where did this happen?

80th Street in Va Beach...where I spent every summer growing up. 55 years living summers there and never saw anything more than a crab wash up.

Great pics as always! What a waste of beast. We cant afford losing these creatures we soooo need them.

Wow, I would never imagine a whale would wash up that far south. I know the Atlantic gets pretty cold in the winter there and it's obviously possible.

Great photos! I wonder if those marks were done postmortem?

LOVE your trips to the beach -- great shots of the kiddos.

:( sad about the whale

The marks indicated by the arrows were caused by a ship propeller. I'm pretty sure it hit the prop while attempting to swim to the surface.
