Help Needed! The vet says my bulldog needs to lose weight

Hello all,

Every time we take my bully to see the vet and she says he’s overweight.

He’s not yet 2 years old and now weighs a little over 70lbs. Is he fat? He is a big boy and he has a big head. We feed him 1 cup of Fromm’s lamb & lentil each morning and evening, then 1 cup of vegetables or fruits at lunch.

Thank you! Yes we take him out for walks daily for about an hour each time. We play with him at home a lot as well, like tugs and make him chase us.

Good exercise as a lot don’t even get any. Does he swim? Get him a vest and make him paddle a bit. Great exercise.

Sometimes I think maybe vets compare they're weight to that of any breed.


Ie: a Beagle of roughly the same size would probably weigh maybe 40lbs (guessing) but they don't have as much muscle mass as a bully

Muscle weighs more than fat.

He looks great ! I personally feel the same struggle as a short person with a lot of muscle. I'm technically obese but would not consider myself that way! I think bulldogs suffer from the same problem...being compared to other breeds!

Exactly! He’s in proportion. We used to feed him 2 cups of dog food each morning and evening, he weighed about 68lbs, a few months ago we cut it down to 1 cup each time but he’s put on more weight. Definitely think it’s muscle.
