Hi meet loco - loco beach.jpg (4 months old in this pic)

Our EB puppy is 7 months old tomorrow and from 5 months old all of a sudden he started getting pink skin on his white areas especially on his forehead and below his neck, down his legs.

We saw a vet and they said possible skin condition dermatitis. He was then given 10 days worth of antibiotics and medicated shampoo. This has not helped.

Some days its not as red as others but since this started hes been letting off a horrible smell and I was him once a week due to this (with his medicated shampoo)

He doesnt go mad to itch at all so it doesnt seem to bother him but it doesnt look healthy. We then travelled for hours to see a bulldog specialist who said he wanted to rule out 'mites' as around the same time as this happening he started getting lumps all over his body come and go. so we are now trialing more antibiotics and a spray for his skin.

Does anyone else have this problem?

We have only switched food once and if these new antibiotics dont work then we have to be reffered to Cambridge University to see a skin specialist to rule out allergies.

other problems since this occured:

Huge green eye bogies after waking up in morning everyday and when lifting up the flap of skin resting on his nose he has this horrible grey stuff I have to clean and it stinks!!

Sounds like an allergy since you state it comes and goes, could be environmental. have you tried Benedryl... you can give up to 3x a day 1 mg per pound.

Also, what are you feeding?

Hi

Yes i suppose it could be anything really as we are in rural location with fields and so on.

He is on james wellbeloved junior and has the occasional bit of cheese and jumbo bones as a treat every morning. Thats about it.

Yes we do give him childrens benadryl medicine. im not very good with measurements but we give him a 5ml spoonful every day is that enough?

No, no not Childerns.... it is bad for them. Use regular adult tablets/capsules.

really :( I did research and it said it would be fine but i guess not...ok I will change this today.. luckily he hasnt had it every day since a week ago.

Thanks for letting me know.

It has to do with the sweeteners/sugar used in the children formula... just not good for canine ingestion.

right ok - and whats this stuff building up within the crease on top of his nose? its horrible and I have to clean it everyday. is it normal?

That wonderful stuff is yeast. There are several reasons for it and there are several ways to get rid of it. Yeast creams are one...antibiotics are another. It depends on what type of yeast it is. Panalog, malaket.....just to name a few more.

We feed both of ours greek fatfree plain yogurt. Since then it's cleared up the rusty chin stain on Vegas's chin and it's helped keep Orion's tear stains away.

Libra926... got ya covered on that. it is usually a result of the allergies too.... once you get them under control (as much as you can) the yeast will lessen, as will the smell.

Also...the childrens benadryl is only 1/2 strength. So the 5mls you gave would have been roughly 12.5mg. That is a good dose for a 12 pound puppy (but the liquid is all sugar). One adult tablet will cover a 25 pound dog and 2 for a 50 pound dog. Make sure to do it at least twice a day because benadryl is a short acting drug.

Thanks for your advice - I did wonder what this yeast was and it explains the smell!

I have now gone and purchased Benadryl tablets and will give him 2 a day and hopefully I will start seeing some change. Fingers crossed!

how much does Loco weight? Remember, 1 mg per pound up to 3x a day. My girl is 60 lbs so she get two tablets 2x a day

Sounds like allergies....the hard part is figuring out to what. You should probably look to switch to a decent grain free kibble. And go from there.

I believe he is around 20-25 lbs

It says there's 8mg in 1 tablet so 2 tablets a day enough?

Well James beloved seems to be a very good quality kibble and he loves it so I'll see how that goes and it's so frustrating not knowing what the allergy is. Knowing my luck it will be bloody grass! :) we have loads of it :/
