That is one of the problems. We aren't quite sure what happened. It was on a Sunday afteroon, and my boyfriend had left to go watch the game with the guys. I fell asleep in the recliner only to wake up to him not wanting to use his back leg. He never cried out in pain. We decided to wait and see if it was still hurting in the morning, and take him to the vet. Sure enough, we got x-rays done, and were sent straight to the orthopedic specialist. Dr. Jones informed me, he did have a fracture, however we would not have to operate, but he would have to put him out to cast him and I could pick him back up in a couple hours. The next phone call I received was that he woke up from the gas, but was now coughing up blood, and that he either had a diphragmatic tear, or he had a birth defect and born w/ out one and to come say our goodbyes just in case, he needed immidiete surgery. Fortunately for us, Dr Jones also has a speciality in diaphgrmatic tears, and it was only a tear that they were able to repair :) Dr Jones (now our hero) and his wife (head nurse at the clinic) took Brutus to their personal home that night so he could stay on his oxygen tent and IVs with them instead of an ER with calls to us every few hours to let us know how he was. Needless to say 14 vet visits later, our baby is doing great! I have never been so scared for one of my babies in my life! I couldn't imagine not having Brutus in our family, as he is the best we could ever ask for! Brutus is very well known at the vet for being so strong, and smart as they can't think of another dog that could of delt w/ the pain that he did. I know it is unusual, but I thank God for the fractured leg, or else we would have never known about the tear and he would have died that night from cardiac arrest. We also have carried pet insurance/wellness insurance on Brutus from the second day we had him, which in my opinion reccommend. If anyone has any questions over casts, diaphragmatic tears, or anything on our strong boy's journey we are happy to answer!

Oops!

I forgot to mention, we walked the house on our hands and knees to see what he possibly could have done to cause such an injury & the only thing we could come up with was him possibly trying to climb the dog steps to our bed, and fell off backwards tumbling over the steps. We had the steps because Marlee (our youngest JRT) couldn't get in the bed and loves her steps. Said steps are now forever gone. Times like this we couldn't wish more that Brutus could tell us exactly what happened.

Wow, sorry he got the broken leg but like you said, lucky that he did so the vet found the tear and was able to repair it and save his life. It's amazing how attached we get to these little guys, as they are a part of the family. So glad he is doing better now. He is a little trooper for sure.

I was attached before we even got him, and then once I met him and his amazing spirit I knew it was meant to be!

:hiya: I'm so late to officially welcome you! Wow! What an orientation you've had! And did you ever consider his middle name could be affecting his "karma". mayhem and all!! Reminds me if the Allstate commercial!

Sorry, I digressed! I hope you are enjoying the forum and Brutus is wonderful!

I feel your pain. Maggie fell down the stairs two weeks after getting her. Words can not describe how awful that experience was!!

:smileywelcome: to Brutus, Dee j and Jay,
Nice pics and so glad to hear Brutus has recover from his leg injury.

Thank you guys! His leg is doing great, we are still dealing with his paw right now. He got his cast wet which caused his paw to get inflamed, but we are well on our way to being done with that as well. A simple paw bath in the sink with dish soap and warm water every night, and it is healing great! I can't wait till it's all done & the hair has grown back.

I'm sorry about your little Maggie, sounds like she recovered great though! I understand the heart break, I don't ever want to go through that again
:nonono:
