HI All

I picked up our new 7mo puppy from Arkansas this weekend. The breeder informed me that she will need surgery as she has an elongated soft palate and that she has already had pneumonia from this. Has anyone done this before? What was the outcome? I have been doing some research and hope to get her into out vet this morning to discuss spay and the palate. She is doing the gagging and snorting that is typical with this issue. I appreciate any feedback.

Thank you!!

Many of us had this done for our bullies. Its good to wait until they are two because they keep growing and you don't want to have the surgery done twice. However, if your pup has trouble breathing or cannot socialize properly as a pup, maybe its best to have it done when she's spayed. Lola had to have it done because she could never calm down after playing for a short time. Her tongue turned blue once because she couldnt get any air. YOu can search for palate in the EBN search box and find many many threads. Here are some more recent ones

Hi Amanada.... Yes, it is very common and I had it done to two of my three bullies. Most times, unless it is really severe some vets will wait till the pup is two years old as the tissue does continue to grow with them.

Nitschke, my EB had it done at 2.5 and his was part of a four piece procedure to help him, palate, nares, and two other things I can remember right now. He was puppy's puppy all over again after the procedue. Still snored and had some phlegm issues, but nothing near before the surgery. That was back in 2006.

Chelios, my Frenchie, had it done twice just lastl year, at 8 mths old out vet told us he would need it done, but would not do it till he was at least 2 yrs old... the first procedure went well, but after a few months Cheli was still having issues with sleep apnea.... So Joe wanted to take more tissue off which is why the second surgery. Cheli is doing fantastic and still snores like a freight train, but his apnea is occasional not constant.

keep in mind the surgery is to HELP not complete remove the issues, a lot of it is just part of big a short nosed breed.

let me know what questions you have... More than happy to help you through
