Ok the dreaded time of year for dogs is approaching and already Iāve heard a few fireworks going off.
Everyone probably knows all the tips and tricks, but just in case.
Iāve always been surprised at how many dog owners donāt know some of them and generally stick with the old frays.
Iām not saying they donāt help but I donāt all dogs respond to the same things.
For example Iāve never had one dog respond to the various pheromone diffusers and weighted blankets coats etc.
Making cardboard tunnels popping a few treats to hunt out, or making a treasure hunt with their food and treats.
With enough boxes and anything that can be turned into a tunnel. For example a covered fire guard, baby gate use your imagination.
The one thing Iāve found really helps is to go online and stream firework sounds. They generally last an hour and naturally start it off low and gradually raise the volume, distracting them at the same time helps.
I used to play it outside too during play and toilet time. Naturally we do our best to keep them indoors as much as possible but there are times it canāt be avoided.
Cover their crate and leave the door wide open with their favourite chew toys treats and water.
Another thing, again everyone probably knows but if your dog gets stressed or anxious, donāt fuss them. Thatās just reinforcing that those nasty loud sounds are bad. Again distract them, act as you normally would.
Iām probably preaching to the converted sorry, but I needed tips for this when I had my first dog.
