My boy Bronx - 5 years old - has had audible popping in his right leg (think hip) for the last few days. Pretty loud with an intermittent mild limp. Otherwise normal - runs outside to lay in the sun, etc. Has anybody experienced this with their bulldog? What was the outcome?

Vet did physical exam yesterday and knee felt “crunchy” but hips felt “good”. Did x rays and sedated physical exam today. Said hips don’t look too bad on x ray - not perfect but not bad. But Physical exam under sedation mimicking weight bearing load both hips managed to luxate. Vet said both knees also looked like they had ACL tears.

Referring to ortho surgeon for consult, but said probably needs both knees and both hips. Ugh. For real? We went in with primary concern being the popping. I’m crushed that he would have to go through all of that. I’m hoping surgeon has a different opinion.

Wow, so very sorry to hear that. I hope the surgeon has a better result for you. Wish you and your boy all the best.

Popping is often a luxating patella. If hips were a serious problem, your pup would be unable to walk without substantial pain. I'm thinking the hips are not what you are hearing.
Please report back what is determined by the orthopedic specialist

I will let everyone know what the ortho says. How do these guys do after ACL surgery?

Also, here is Bronx’s x-ray for those that know what they are looking at - I do not!

oscarmayer…. Not too bad, don’t you think?

ACL… they do very well after. Key is limited activity, no stairs, running, jumping… short leashed walks only for several weeks.
If you do need the surgery for your boy, they will give you all the proper care instructions when you pick him up

Hi, we went through something similar with our first bully Dudley

We were out on a walk with him and could hear a loud “click” that to be honest we didn’t realise it was coming from Dudley because it was such a loud noise!

Anyway after numerous vet visits and finally ending up at a bulldog specialist vet he had ACL surgery and as previously said he did really well after it but they must be kept on a leash and no stairs or jumping which is the hardest part of all! :D

I'm no radiologist but those hips look very close to normal for a Bulldog. I see mild dysplasia. Look for the dark area between the ball and socket. Ideally there would be no dark area.
Here's an example of moderate dysplasia...

Bronx probably has a knee issue.
Thanks for the follow-up
