Hello I have a a 10 month old English bulldog and I am recently feeding him 1 1/2 cups of food two times a day and he is looking g a bit slim is that that correct amount to feed him?
What brand and what is the recommended portion for his weight?
Seems like lots to me, I feed just under 1 1/2 twice a day, Kain is 52 lbs and just under 2 years.
If he is active and slim you can increase but judge by activity level, can you notice his ribs or is there a nice layer over them? If a nice layer don't change an enjoy a fit bully!! Much better option then overweight.
When our two were pups we fed them 1 cup of Fromms kibble 3 times a day until they were 7 months old, then we switched them to 1 cup twice a day. They are 21 months old, and weigh 45 lbs each. A good way to judge if the food intake is adequate is to judge by their poops, our guys go 2 to 3 times a day, and they are firm but soft. You don't want soft, mushy, or soft serve poops, and you don't want them going poop all day long. Also you can judge if they are too skinny, or gaining too much weight, by looking at your bully from above, they should have a well defined waist, and by feel, you should be able to feel their ribs, but not see them. Also if your dog is more active, then they can use the extra 1/2 cup of food per day.
Agree with Vince00 and Vikinggirl, some bullies burn calories faster when they are young and don't start looking thick until they are over two. Would love to see some pictures.
I have nothing more to add from what has been said above. That is great advice. If you post a pic from above looking down on his back it is easier to tell.
I would just like to add that feeding "cheap" dog food-no matter how much-will just come out the other end more-and they will get very little benefit from it. The brand of food you are feeding was not stated. Quality makes a big difference, as EBN members know.
Definitely and you can find good quality food within almost any budget. Sheldon gets 1 1/2 cups twice a day also but he is very active plays a lot and he is a taller bully. He weighs in just over 60 lbs at a couple of weeks shy of two.
