The (high) cost of neutering a bulldog.

With Miss Tallulah I opted for the blood test and the extra fluids. They are optional but optimal and considering we have Bracycephalic doggies that are at much higher risk for complications or death from anesthesia it is not a bad idea if you can afford it. The actual neutering is not that expensive on your estimate, but your vet is being responsible by including those things. But if you don't feel right about your vet trust your instincts. You want someone you can trust and develop a long term relationship with.

Is would still be close to $600 without the blood test. According to them, they can't do the blood test unless my dog is sedated.

I live in Long Island. We were quoted $500 for each of our girls to be spayed. So I found a rescue vet. They did them each for $160. I was a little nervous, but everything came out without a hitch.

Any chance i can see a pic of her tail? Everybody says Meekos tail is too long for him to be a EB. I dont have the issue with no feeling tho so would never have his removed. He goes mad and always chases it so i think he knows its rong lol x

Bully tails come in all kinds of shapes and lengths!!! Daddy's is curly. Linus is like a question mark. And Bella has a stub. Til I got Maggie I always thought bully tails were cropped but now I know they come in all sizes!!!

They only do Miss T's blood work when sedated too. I think they are being responsible but are a bit pricey. Often if the vet's place is large with a big staff then they may charge more. Kind of like lawyers and dentists. You pay more for the expensive offices. If it were me I would try to find a vet who understands Bullies and does all those thing and see if they quote a little less. There is nothing wrong with shopping around. Also I am in Canada so prices may be different but I paid around 500.00 including taxes and pain meds, including morphine. But Miss T is female and sprays are a bit more expensive here. Then again if they are going in to look for a testicle it is a more complex procedure. I wish you all the best in your research.

sarah was spayed this summer and it was like 600 and some dollars but hers was an emergency and she had to stay the night and most of the next day so not sure what a regular spay would have been.

Here is the breakdown for Gunny. You can ignore the Cherry Eye of $150 and the Cherry Eye Add'tl minutes of $44.00 and the Momentamax (meds for ear infection) of $44.46. gunnyspay 001.jpg

I've had LOTS of dogs & cats all my life (sucker for a stray, lol) and usally had a bunch
at same time so I've always used low cost spay/neuter clinics...NEVER had any problems!

For a bully, I would look for a Vet Hospital, all should be fine. Good luck & GOD bless!

Why?? That's ridiculous. Abby had blood tests every month of her life and she was never, ever sedated. I take fosters for blood work each time a new one walks in my door and they aren't drugged either. I would put a BIG question mark on that.

Does anyone know of a decent place to have this done around West Los Angeles? My vet in Marina Del Rey quoted me just north of $1500 for neutering / cryptorchid surgery, which I thought was insane. I'm actually considering it because I worry too much about him getting a hack job.

OUCH... your poor boy -- are both not dropping? if yes, it actually is best to stay with a vet you trust and pay for the best work. This is a painful process and if not done correctly it can be a very long recovery road.

BTW -- welcome to EBN!

Oh yes! Dr. Kraemer in Santa Ana! The only place I will go for any real problems ever again. He is one of the best and most fair vets I have seen. Cutty had his acl torn and I called just for a price quote. Dr. Kraemer called me back specifically just to discuss it and asked me to email him my X-rays that were taken elsewhere, just to give me a second opinion. He knew I wasn't a customer of his and just did this because he cares. Of course he won me over instantly. AND his price was much less Than I had been quoted at the first vets office. He works greatly with the Southern California bulldog rescue and has a great specialist that comes in and does surgeries that need him. Wow i just wrote an essay, I am sorry. This is the first vet I have ever loved so much. Arkham

I have been very fortunate i actually used a low cost say & neuter clinic for both the bullies. I went with a list of questions and talked to them for a long time. I was lucky they had pugs and knew which one of thier vets would be best. ..

I love them!!!

Trust your gut lady <3
