Hello everyone haven’t been around in a bit but am having an issue with our Bully Winston. He’s began exhibiting a strange behavior in that hes snapping at imaginary bugs or flys . It’s like he goes into a trance and starts snapping at the air repeatedly at times . It’s definitely episodic sometimes he spins quickly around like he’s seeing something it seems to flair up at times can’t discern the trigger . Perhaps chewing on collagen bone. He’s had an ear issue that’s clearing up he hates the medicine in his ear. But he was doing it before that it seems as well. Sometimes he can’t sleep because of it. I’ve done some reading seems like a thing has anyone else experienced this ? Any info would be appreciated.

Here is an article for you to read. The problem I have always heard on this subject, is that no one really knows the cause.

Agree with Lynn… the cause seems to be unknown.

@oscarmayer — any additional insight

We've had several dogs do this...some worse than others. Some fly snap others just lick lick lick. No known cause that I know of.

So nothing to worry about? He’s dealing with some ear issues hates the medicine in his ears and seems to happen more after getting medicated or chewing on collagen bones or at least this seems to be true. It’s definitely worse at times. Was given some sedative when he went through TPLO surgery have had to give him this a couple times just so he can sleep. So a little worried but appreciate you all

Could be a deep inner ear infection… have you had them checked since this started?

Yes there were infected a little now they look very clear as we treated them but he just went through a bad episode of aggressive fly biting and spinning around like he sees something .. I’m gonna take him in can’t afford it but worried

Any update? When I say deep inner ear infection, it is way down in there, sometimes it is missed by vets and it really has to be looked for

No update we have a couple months worth of big payments to make to avoid interest on an old TPLO surgery. He goes through spells were he’s fine and has not been scratching his ears so we are taking a wait and see approach he’s playful eats just has these episodes thanks for checking in. He’s inhaling down his breakfast right now ; ) I will keep yall posted
