General Question Finding a Vet

I've seen the list of recommended vets, and I've tried searching but can't seem to find the answer.

Is there a list of questions or qualifications to look for when wanting to make sure that a vet is "EB Qualified"? I've been browsing through the forum and doing searches but can't seem to find anything. I have no complaints about our current vet, but in reading here and other places I understand this breed requires a little more. Anyone can say yes to the question of do you treat them, but would hate to find out the hard way later that they didn't know something about this breed that leads to worse problems.

I used the vet recommended by my breeder. She just said "most don't know much about bulldogs", so that wasn't really helpful. However, she did say one thing as an example. For the Bordetalla vaccine, she said most/many vets would want to do the intra-nasal, but the injection is best for bulldogs. So I think it's little quirky things like that in which vets have a lot of experience with bulldogs will know.

I go with experience. My vets are older and smart, although they are not 'cutting edge' I trust them with my bulldogs lives.

All vets will say they are experienced with bulldogs. Not true unfortunately. I do most of my own vetting, but when I need anything that is out of my hands done I also know my vets will not nickel and dime me to death. As a vet once told me, when an EB walks through the door the vet thinks "Cha-ching!" and they WANT your business.

I found my vet just by Googling "English Bulldog Specialists" and reading the reviews of each doctor. Matilda's current vet is WONDERFUL! People drive from all over to see him, he gets rave reviews, and actually runs his own bully rescue, so he knows everything about the breed. His office even makes their own bulldog products - food, treats, soaps, etc!

EDIT: I just saw the Vet Rec. list, and he's on that! Maybe go off the list and do more research online?

1 question: What food do you recommend?




Seriously tho, that is my most important question. Beyond that, I like to hear about not masking symptoms with medications and finding the source of issues.

I guess it also comes with experience in dog ownership as well. For example, I asked my vet if we could give Molly antibiotics daily to help with her eye bugers, nothing was helping.

His reply was "Well you don't want to do that, then she will get covered in yeast and you will be back here next month and you will really have a problem."

This is the kind of person / vet you want to be on your side.

Be hesitant if you vet tries to 'sell' you stuff while you are there. Food, shampoos, 'allergy shots', if they don't tell you what KIND of medication they are injecting into your dog you should be weary. Always ask and make sure it's on your paperwork in case your pet has a reaction.

Geez, It is hard to explain or think of good questions to ask....

When you vet charges for $50 exam watch them. They should be checking ears, eyes, throat, gums, hips and glands. A prime example is you make an appt for a eye issue, but they never check anything else except the eye. I make them check everything!

I am a vets worst nightmare because I know what most meds do and a lot of bulldog ailments and expect them to give me a good service and make sure my dogs stay at optimum health. Luckily, we don't visit the vet very often!
