My Lily and Daisy are both in Service Animal training. Right now they are polishing their off leash skills such as backing up on command and backing up under chairs. They have mastered the basics, and are very calm and dependable in even the busiest venues such as Caesar's Casino and Forum Shops. They started their service specific training last week working on retrieve behaviors. Soon, they will be able to pick up objects and "hand" them to us. My wife and I are both disabled with back injuries, and cannot stoop or bend to pick things up off the floor. My wife is in the early stages of dementia, and hopefully it won't get much worse. But if it does, we will have Lily to stick with her, and Daisy to find her on command should she become separated from me. Service Animal training is marvelous! It creates an astoundingly wonderful bond between dog and handler. Lily already understands her roll as my wife's protector. This morning, my wife became nauseated due to chemo meds, and started dry heaving at the kitchen sink. Lily was sleeping in her beanbag, altered to the sound, jumped up and literally ran into the kitchen to stand by her side. It was truly touching!
