Hi,

I am new to this forum and just after some advice! We have a 7 year old bulldog called Buddy, we has been having problems with both fronts paws for about a year now on and off we have visited the vet on numerous occasions with them saying he had grass seed in his paw to start but we know think this could be allergy related /licking constantly!
The vet has given us antibiotics every time to deal with the inflammation. Our last visit was only 3 weeks ago and this evening I have noticed the same paw is inflamed again! I have posted a picture of the lump in-between his paw pads and just wondering if anyone knows what this is?

Thanks šŸ™

Hello and Welcome to EBN Too much Antibiotic will destroy his gut flora n immune system which he needs to build. The picture definitely shows there’s something smack in the middle. I’m surprised the vet didn’t mention to maybe cut or suck out the little round purple section. If it was in between the toes usually it’s a digital cyst but you mentioned in between inside the paw. Have you tried soaking the paw(s) in an epsom salt bath? Might soften it out n pierce on its own.

Thank you for your reply!
The past few times this has happened, his paw has swollen causing him to limp and it has popped by itself! I have bathed his paw in epsom salts before but hasn't done anything to help.
As this is happening often I don't know what causes it..he loves licking his paws so whether he's causing it himself I'm not sure. We have bought socks for him to wear to try and reduce the excessive licking.
The vets bills are starting to gather up with consultations and antibiotics every time.

What do you feed him?

Sadly a lot of vets don’t want to go to the source of some health issues n will just prescribe antibiotics or other meds cause they’re EB. šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø I personally wouldn’t give antibiotics for that till I knew what the issue would be. But that’s me. If it happens often n pops on its own each time as you mentioned, I would still soak the paws in epsom salts. My previous EB had often cyst n they would come n go. I would do the soak, sterilize a needle n pierce it. I would drain it properly n add Bag Balm( with udders of a cow on the can) for a few days n it disappears. NuStock would also work. It completely stopped when I put him on a raw diet. Why I’m asking what you’re feeding him.

So I feed my EB James Welbeloved dog biscuits, I was going to change it to grain free to see if that would stop the cysts but maybe I should change to raw? He has been on the same food since a puppy.
Thank you for that, cyst is still there ATM but I will defo try this in the morning!

Are you doing the Epsom salt soak for 10 minutes? It also helps to apply gentle constant pressure when drying to help it drain fully

If you can you won’t go wrong with a raw diet. It simply builds their immune system. In UK you have these great corner Butcher Shops. Ask around if the do raw for dogs. Butchers often throw away their trimmings which a dog will eat n great for them. If it’s not possible buy a quality grain kibble n start adding raw liver n organs to the kibble, raw egg, fermented saurkraut from the fridge section, chicken/turkey/duck necks/wings chopped up, raw marrow bones as a chewing toy etc. Whatever you add I’d consider additional to the portions of the meal so don’t overfeed. Use less kibbles if you add raw n that goes also for the treats. If you see kibbles called Acana single protein which IK holds n says ā€œMade in Canadaā€ only not USA, that’s a quality product. But like mentioned, raw is the way to go if you can.

Welcome to EBN! Helene has you covered. Since you are in UK… look into Oodles raw food if you plan to switch to raw.

My first thought was that a splinter or foreign object was festering deep in his paw. If that's the case, I'd soak his foot (or feet) in warm epsom salt water for at least 10 minutes, 2-3 times a day for a few days and see if that doesn't bring a foreign object to the surface. If there is fluid building up inside, the pressure has got to be a source of pain to the poor boy. If you go back to your vet, ask if that pad should be lanced. HOWEVER, is he experiencing the same thing on the other foot or other paw pads?
