Yeah, I'm toughing out Walley-Bubba's nails too.
I think the dew claws are probably the main culprit.
We had them removed on some very, very young (2-3 weeks) Beagle pups many years ago on advice from the vet.
So as to avoid getting scraped when the dogs jumped up in later life.

Walley-Bubba still has his dew claws.
Probably too late now (8 months) to remove them.
We expect the jumping up to wane as he ages to.
