Ok
I wasn't gonna watch it.
I really wasn't gonna.
I kept hearing about the shock and outrage an yada yada yada.
But i wasn't gonna watch it.
But then I realized that it's my solemn duty to observe and report my editorial to you, my loyal readers.
So I watched it on YouTube.
I watched the Miley Cyrus performance from the VMA's.
I gotta tell ya, folks; there is something so wrong about how predictable this whole thing was. I could've told you 5 years ago that the sweet little girl with the million dollar Disney smile would be riding a foam hand like a jockey on Clydesdale coming around the clubhouse turn. And how did I know that not only would Miley take the "Disney to skank" in 60 seconds routine like so many other pop stars I.e. spears, agulara, ect, but take it even further and faster than those who came before?
Simple.
What choice does she have?
We will get back to this in a second.
A problem i have with our culture here in the states is the glorification of empty and brainless dregs that we have learned to laugh at when we encounter them in our daily lives but in reality (or reality TV) have aloud them to take over a coveted spot in our culture.
"What spot is that, Mike?"
The role model.
These idiots are our kid's role models.
Well, your kids. I don't have any Kids but if I did than this would be troubling me more than just malcontent dislike for all things popular.
When we take an idiot like Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian who are famous for nothing more than being rich and leaving the camcorder on while they bone other idiots and give them their own show a month later and put them out there for everyone to see, what we are really doing is telling everyone that this is what a star is. This behavior is acceptable. These are the "in crowd."
At this point I must disclaim that I am not for censorship. Also not republican or conservative or over christianized. In other words I am not affiliated with any group that wants to tell you what to (or what not to) watch or say or believe.
I'm just another armchair analyst who knows a bad condition when I see it.
Now, back to the subject at hand.
Where was I?
Oh yea
Idiots
What bothers; really bothers me about the Miley thing is her target audience is kids and teens. I'm 31 years old and I don't know any grown ups who listen to Miley. I have friends and family in their 20's and they don't listen either and yet her song is #2 in the country so the kids must be all over this dribble.
She knows she's talking to kids in her records. You know it. I know it.
I was in punk bands from the age of 15 to 25 and our lyrical content read like a scene from 'Casino' so maybe this is gonna sound hypocritical but she is singing about drugs behaving like a stripper on stage so every time I see a young girl walking down the street in manhattan looking very much like a hooker I say to myself "Miley's fault"
Now, I know it's not Miley's fault. It's the American condition.
We glorify the Jersey shores and teen moms and rich talentless skanks and honey boo boos of the world and by doing so we numb the shame that people should feel when they behave like that.
I'm not saying "don't let your kids watch that stuff." I would let my kids watch it but only after I explained to them that these people on TV are false idols. Talentless hacks with nothing more working for them other than our morbid curiosity about them. We watch the jersey shore in my house. Pretty much for the same reason we watch hoarders and giants football. Because I hate them. Only once I'm sure my kids understand that Snooki and mama June may be funny but we should be laughing AT THEM. Not laughing WITH THEM. And no matter what the other kids at school say, these people are not what you wanna be. The only people who respect idiots are other idiots.
So imagine you are Miley Cyrus. Your getting older. You have very little talent. The last performance actually confirmed it. Can't sing. Can't dance. To old for Disney $. What to do? How do we stay in the spotlight?
shock value.
Not in an artistic sudo-skank way like a lady gaga type shock value.
Just straight up stripper mode. That was her only play. Keep the people taking until we can get back in the studio and use an auto tune and numerous filters and effects to make my voice sound tolerable while I sing a song my producer wrote for someone else to sing but they just overdosed or got beat up by Chris Brown so now it's my song.
