    Default Pet First-Aid

Been considering taking a pet first aid course. Wanted to know if you think it's a good idea or not really worth it.

No, never even considered it....... we have a pet hospital about 12 blocks from us. I guess that is somewhat comforting.

I voted other because pet first aid classes are not available in this county. It would make a good 4H project for someone!

I could tell you first hand that it is of great importance to take a Pet CPR and first aid class. I lost my female english bulldog named Ruby at the age of 4 months old in 2008. She died from Aspiration. She was born with some problems already and noone knew exactly how long she could live. And we were amazed that she actually lived that long. This is one experience I wouldn't want to happen to anyone. She was eating her own kibble,on Thanksgiving night. She was never given table food. She made a loud gasping sound and went to hide around the sofa. I went to her, cleared her mouth to make sure she wasn't choking. She couldn't get air and immediately went limp and gums were going blue to white. In a matter of seconds. We rushed into the truck, thought we were going to the Banfield clinic in Petsmart, which was only a few blocks away, but they were closed for the holiday. Called police to find nearest 24 hour emergency hospital, we got there, they tried to intubate her, but her lungs had filled with blood from capillaries bursting. Dooctors had put her in air chamber and said they were going to try to drain her lungs but were not sure if she was going to make it. Xrays showed no objects in esophagus. We were in great grief, and I only blamed myself that maybe there was more I could've done, even though the doctor says no. I was scared to get another pup for a very long time. I made certain before getting another pup that I took a Pet CPR and First Aid class, and have twice since then, to be sure I am refreshed. I have supplies here and I am more aware and certain that I will be able to handle any situation that comes. I strongly suggest taking a class, and I know an awesome lady that does it here in So. Cal., if you want the number. Having to drive more than 1 block is too long when you are under stress, trust me. I also advise not only knowing where the 24 hour Emergency Hospital is, but to ACTUALLY drive there, to know the route to get there. I hope this helps atleast one bullie and family from EVER having to experience something like that. We never had any problems with our 2 males before her. Today,I do have another female bullie, named Roxy, and she is 20 months old, and she is doing great. I wouldn't leave her side while she would eat for the longest time. I still watch her closely, but not with any fear like before. Any questions or comments, don't hesitate. Take care.

@gizmo49ers - So sorry to hear about your loss. But thank you for sharing. I'll be enrolling in the next class which is on April 11th.

@Alice Kable - It's actually the doggy daycare owner who's gong to teach the class. She received her pet first-aid certification from a pet specialist somewhere out of province. I'm sure there's one in your area.

I voted other ... only because I haven't taken one and it has never crossed my mind to do one. Maybe, if I saw one advertised somewhere I would consider it!

Never thought about it, but would probably consider attending if I found somewhere offering it
