Hi Everyone.

I took my 5 year old EB girl Rosie to an orthopedic specialist today and he said her ACL is ruptured in her left back leg and needs surgery. I am terrified of losing her in surgery, have heard of too many bulldogs not making it through. I asked him about a brace and he said that I would be wasting my money. I'd really appreciate any advice!

Also, her hair is coming out all over. It started out with little spots but now the little spots are everywhere. The Dr today said she must have had hives. What should I do? She has had the flank alopecia for 3 years now and has been on Melatonin but the hair never grew back on her sides. She is also on Apoquel and has taken it for 2 years.
These little spots started about 2 months ago. No food changes, I have been feeding her Avoderm for 3 years.

Thank you!
Joy

I don't have any experience with ACL, but am wondering if the hair loss is due to demodectic mange, which can happen when a dog is on apoquel. Vet can do scraping to diagnose this, and best treatment is usually to stop apoquel and give Nexgard once monthly ( which will also take care of ticks and fleas ). Has your vet considered switching dog to Cytopoint injections ?

Can an you post pictures of the hair loss? SFA can also be helped with fish oil, melatonin did not help for my guy.

I’d also ask about stopping apaoquel and start cytopoint shots.

food, although it has worked, it might not be agreeing with her now.

Thank you for the advice, I sure didn't know about Demodetic mange being caused by Apoquel. The vet that looked at he the other day told me to up the Apoquel for the hair loss or start the Cytopoint injections. I have attached pics of her. The big patches missing are the FSA.

Too long on Apoquel will weaken the immune system no matter what. My white face Duke had all little holes like that. He was tested n I did go to his 2 vets. One is very knowledgeable on bullies n one is on the holistic side. Turns out both said was his immune system that wasn’t strong enough. You find that in a lot of puppies. He’s 18 months old now and I can say safely his fur is beautiful now no more holes. But yes Apoquel will weaken any system. Read this link but read the people’s comments all the way down. Might answer some of your questions..

Yes, black patch is SFA... the little spots look like staph infection and the clear bald could be manage–- get off the apoquel and just do Cytopoint.

Do you know what her allergies are?

I agree, it looks like staph. Need an antibiotic for that. She needs a good pro-biotic in her food, to fortitfy her immune system. As for SFA, one of mine had it 4 yrs ago, and hair has never grown back on her side. Melatonin didn't do any good.

I am going to take her back to the vet this week about her skin. Will have them start her on Cytopoint. Is it true though that the effectiveness is less each time she gets the injection? Thank you so much for helping me.

I personally stick to the food side... fermented sauerkraut or kefir and I give it on regular basis. Some members will buy it in capsules... they can answer you on their brand. :)

I think it'd be safer to start probiotics once your dog is not immunocompromised from the apoquel. Some examples of some commercial doggy probiotics include Proviable DC, Herbsmith Microflora Plus, and Probiotic Miracle. I've used Probiotic Miracle for my dog. Right now I'm using water kefir on my dog since I have the grains, but milk kefir is supposed to be more beneficial. I've also bought live sauerkraut from refrigerator section of health food store and given it to my dog too. Yoghurt doesn't have as much bacteria as sauerkraut or kefir but I have given that as well. It's hard to know which one is best from just giving it to dog, since you don't expect dramatic results immediately.

I’ve seen longer time this year with Lambeau... last year his shot was making it just about 5 weeks, this year we made a full 8 before his ears started showing signs of allergies. It could also be due to all the rain we are getting, but Lambeau is allergic to everything green so i would think it would matter

Just a thought- has your dog ever been tested for hypothyroidism ? That causes hair loss.
