    Unhappy Entropion Surgery Scheduled

Sooooo Chunk's Entropion surgery is scheduled for Friday (March 11) at 8:30am. I know he's going to feel soooo much better after but I am so totally nervous. (First surgery with my first doggie ever!) I am curious of everyone's opinions on a few things.

    1. We had originally planned on having Chunk neutered at the time of the eye surgery. I spoke with the eye doctor the other day and he said he doesn't recommend it. He agreed that yes, it's an advantage to not have to put him under anesthesia again - but the disadvantage is that he'd be under anesthesia much longer, which is why he doesn't recommend it. Thoughts anyone??? At this point I'm not going to have him do the neutering but curious what you all think.

    2. Has anyone used this kind of a collar after surgery? In lieu of the plastic ones? Just exploring all options ... thinking he could rest easier in a softer type collar but don't know if it will do the job. Amazon.com: KONG Cloud E-Collar, Dog Collar, X-Large: Kitchen & Dining

    3. Any other suggestions for pre/post-surgery?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

I have not read all your posts about Chunks needing entropian surgery, so forgive me if I ask you something you already told everybody

Your vet is experienced in entropion surgeries, correct? Don't take his word for it... ask him for references. The reason I say this is because a vet ruined 2 of my bulldogs eyes with entopion surgeries, and they do pretty many entropion surgeries a year, but after they ruined 2 bulldogs on the only 2 I have ever needed it done, I asked around and was told NEVER to take any dog there for eye surgery even Cherry eye! So just ask for some of the bulldog owners phone # that have had eye surgeries done there before.

I never seen a collar like that before... it would be great if it would work! Looks a lot more comfortable then those plastic collars. The only reason it ain't going to work is he can still rub his eye on the sofa or things that are at his eye level or maybe even be able to get down to the floor to rub his eye on the carpet. Winston went absolutely crazy with wanting to rub his eye after surgery I pitied him soo bad! But that soft collar might work a week or so after surgery... I would get it and try it, because they need to keep the plastic collar on for at least 2 weeks and Winston got so sore around his neck and by the second week he didn't get so itchy.

Good Luck! I will be praying everything goes smoothly

I'm taking him to an eye specialist recommended by a bulldog vet I went to last week. I think he even said that this eye specialist has done one of his dogs! He told me a few stories of dogs that the eye specialist has done. Thank you for the
    suggestion though!

As for the collar, that was my exact concern with the inflatable one! Maybe I'll get the kind that looks like the plastic one but is soft. Thinking I'll get one and see what he does with it on, I can always return it if necessary!

I am glad to hear that you are taking him to an eye specialist. We have already discussed with our vet that IF it should ever be suspected that Gator might have issues, we will head strait to the specialist (love my vet for caring so much!).

Anyway, that collar looks lots more comfortable. Let us know how it works and especially how the surgery goes!

    1. Yeah they don't want bullys under too long. Back in April 2010 Samson swallowed a toy and needed surgery to remove it. I wanted them to do a dental cleaning while he was out but they said no, they didn't want him under that long.

    2. This is the collar I have for Samson that I used after his surgeries All Four Paws Black Comfy Cone at PETCO

    3. Samson has never had a surgery on his eyes before so I really don't have any post-op suggestions, sorry!

When Busters had cleft palate surgery the plan was to see how he was doing under the anesthesia and then do the neutering if he was doing well. They ended up neutering him at the same time and there were no problems. They just said that they would play it by ear depending on how he was doing. Luckily we had him at a very good hospital and they kept him in ICU and he had his own vet student with him 24 hours a day to make sure that he came out of the anesthesia without any complications. We had to sign something saying that we would allow a tracheotomy if he stopped breathing. It was scary at the time but it all went well.

Did Kinnear recommend this specialist over all others? I have to get Woody down there.

Sounds like he's a great eye doc. Chunk's going to do well.

Thanks for all of the updates.

    Thanks @desertskybulldogs!

@TessaAndSamson I think I'm going to try that ... I'm figuring I'll buy one of those soft cones and a regular cone just in case he is still able to rub with the soft one. Oh man, I hate the idea of him being so uncomfortable in that thing!

@DeeDee The eye dr said basically the same thing ... that he'll know better once he actually sees him.

@Wigglesworth I'm not sure if he's the only one Dr. Kinnear recommends, he did ask if I was in Jersey then gave me his information. I'll definitely have a much better feel for you after Friday.

@GatorRay ... I agree ... our regular vet is the same way. She loves Chunk so much, it's obvious. The only reason I went to the bulldog specialist before the eye specialist was really for a second opinion and his referral to an eye specialist. I like to know that the person dealing with my baby knows lots and lots of Bullies.
