Thread: Cherry eye !

    Default Cherry eye !

Who's gone through cherry eye(s) with their EBD? Did it come back?

My puppy just began getting it in her right eye. 😩 she's 3 months old. Her surgery is next week to have it repaired.

Goob's cherry eye popped out several times as a puppy but I massaged it and pressed it back in. It still will pop out every blue moon but I just massage it back into place. He never needed surgery.

Hi my female Blossom developed cherry eye in her left eye when she was 5 months old, and I also was able to massage it back in for a while, but it would pop out when she ran a lot or played with her brother. I had her at the vet for her vaccinations and we talked to the vet about repairing her eye. We opted to wait until she was 7 months old when we spayed her, so we could do both operations at the same time and avoid putting her under twice. Our vet uses the technique of tacking the eye gland back in rather than removing it. Unfortunately a week after her surgery, her other eye popped out and she needed a second surgery a month later to repair the right eye. The vet did a really good job on her eyes, and you would never know she had surgery. Not always, but often when they develop cherry eye, they will develop it in the other eye as well, so if you can wait a few weeks to see if the other eye comes out. The first surgery with the spay and cherry eye was less expensive than doing her one eye by itself, so it's cheaper if you can do everything at once.

I agree with Monica, wait as long as you can to have the surgery in case the other eye pops out as well. Did the vet try to put it back in?

Thanks for all the input. Well, I had tried to massage it back after learning of the technique but to no avail but it's just forming so it's not too bad yet and she's so small so the cherry eye is also small. I scheduled to have it repaired next week. They vet said it isn't likely to come back but with young puppies it is possible.

It's tough to see them when it first starts to appear. My baby Bocephus not only had cherry eye but the scrolled cartilage as well. I agree with everyone's advice above. Wait a little bit for the surgery, she is still so young and you don't want to put her through more surgeries than absolutely necessary. I would wait at least 8 more weeks and see if the other one appears. The cherry eye is not hurting her and the surgery is not urgent.

Canelo got his at about five months old and massaging didn't work for us. At six months we had him neutered because one testicle wasn't going to drop so we had the cherry eye done at the same time. This saved on anesthesia, or time, and surgical expenses. I also didn't want to put him through surgery multiple times. It hasn't come back and the surgery was 2.5 years ago. Try the massaging, I've seen it work but for Canelo his had issues. Good luck.

Gus had cherry eye -- We brought him home at 8 weeks, then 4 days later the 1st one surfaced. Massaging worked initially but never stayed in for long. We met with an eye specialist (there happened to be one within 2 hours' drive) and scheduled surgery for when he was 4 months. Luckily, a week or two before surgery, the 2nd one popped out. Took care of both at once, and haven't had a problem since. (Tacked back into place).

Thanks everyone, I ended up having it repaired immediately because it began oozing puss each morning so I didn't want to risk an infection.
