Stella
Hi All!
I have a 6 year old English Bulldog, Stella. She has been through the ringer when it comes to surgeries (cherry eyes, both ACL's replaced) and now she needs to have her tail removed. It has become impossible to keep under control and she is SO uncomfortable. I am very anxious about the surgery and worry she will end up paralyzed. Has anyone been through this procedure? Advice for recovery would be awesome also!

We have had this procedure done 10+ times on rescues. Not a single dog has ever had any complications. Post op the patient is left with a nasty looking wound area. It will look really bad but do not worry...looks are deceiving. Follow your Vets instruction with wound care and all will be well in 3-4 months. That's how long it will take for the hair to grow back. The incision will heal much sooner. Your pup will want to resume normal activity in 2-4 days. Limit their activity as best you can until released by Vet.
The biggest risk is the anesthesia and aspiration if the dog vomits. Upset stomach is common after GA. Small amounts of food and water for 2 days post op. Consider feeding the canned food equivalent of what you normally feed since intubation can irritate the throat.

Yep… what Chip said! Lambeau had his done and was wanting to play and run around within a couple days. Looks horrible till it heals, but he did heal up quick

Monty had the tip of his tail removed and his tail pocket reconstructed somehow. It was like night and day, such a huge improvement. It took nearly a year for his hair to grow back though. I thought he was going to have a bald butt forever!

Hope Monty is feeling better now and looking better, too. Roxy's tail has always just consisted of about three or four hairs sticking out of her rear end area...LOL
