Help Needed! Need Help with mysterious choking/passing out episodes!

About a week ago our beloved Odin had some sort of choking episode. Up until this point we have been unable to tell what type of episode (seizure, choking, etc). This is the 5th time in 2 months it has happened.

He’s been at the vet for a few days, and because we have been unable to figure out what types of episodes are occurring our vet is recommending that we move forward with Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome

Fast forward to tonight, I FINALLY was able to find a video of what our guy is experiencing on an this forum from 2015. My concern is that the OP of the video said their bulldog had already went through surgery for Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome and continued to have the episodes.

My Odin is only 1 yr and 7 months old. I’m willing to go forward with surgery, but really want to know if any other EB owners have ran into this. We are desperate for any answers anyone may have.

I am so sorry to hear Odin is experiencing this! The video scared me. I’d be terrified! I’m so sorry that you have to see your baby that way.. I hope someone here can provide some insight. Sending prayers your way for you and Odin ❤️

Appreciate your prayers! We sure need them. This is our first English Bulldog, and we fell in love the minute we met him. It's such a struggle to love a breed that has so many health issues, but we are committed to doing everything in our power to try and help him. Wish it wasn't something so elusive. The mystery is painful.

I know exactly what you mean. Brisket is our first EB as well, and knowing that the breed can have a lot of health issues is scary, but their love is worth every minute. I can’t imagine not having gotten him for fear of the unknown. I’m sure someone here will provide some insight, and if not, I really hope you and your vet can figure out the true cause and help that sweet boy of yours. Have hope, it will all work out. He’s lucky to have such a caring pet parent.

Why surgery for Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome when vets not sure?? Second opinion would be in my mind.

After 2 vet recommendations, ended up at a specialist. We dropped Odin off on Friday. We received a call this morning saying that he was a candidate for Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome. They were going to run some tests tonight to further confirm. (a throat exam). Since Odin aspirated during his last episode, he now is suffering from fluid in his chest which has turned into pneumonia. They called us back to let us know they would not be able to perform a more in depth test, nor surgery until he is cleared from pneumonia.

So, now no surgery, at least for now. Im worried about this episode happening while he is recovering. Im hoping someone who has experience with these episodes can give us some ideas to help avoid them.

Ive searched through this site, and found a few other posts. Indigestion seems to be one thing that keeps coming up as a cause. Hard to believe gagging and passing out can be from something like that?

Pneumonia itself seems terrifying. Im honestly just devastated. But appreciate you all! Thankful to have found this page tonight.

Sounds like he has an elongated palette... has he had this surgery before? I was a little confused... some dogs palette WILL grow back! I had the surgery done on both of my bullies w/out any issues.

It does sounds like the palate is elongated which needs to be verified while pup is under general anesthesia. I’ve had two pups needing this, and one of them had to have it done twice , since is is soft tissue and can grow again.

First of all, I would make sure that you are seeing a Veterinarian who is expert with English Bulldogs. If not-don't let them do any surgery! One of my EBD's had elongated palate surgery and did fine. I have had two seizure dogs. One was a German Shepherd, one was an English Bulldog. Neither of their seizures started out this way, though they did not have elongated palate.They just instantly started seizing. I could imagine, though, how an elongated palate could constrict the airway, and lack of oxygen cause passing out and seizing. Hopefully your vet is knowledgeable and will find the answer. Odin has never had the surgery before.

I had no idea that after surgery, the palette will grow back. I think it's time to find a vet specializing in Bulldogs. Hard enough to find a decent vet in these outskirtish areas outside the larger cities. I live in the central valley of California.

I picked up my pup this morning, and currently am driving him home. They've given us a bunch of medications to help him fight pneumonia as well as prevent any gagging/regurgitating episodes.

clavamox for infection
omeprazole for decreased stomach acid
ciaspride to aid in gastric emptying and prevent regurgitation
enroflaxacin for antibiotic
maropitant for vomiting
trazadone for sedation

Im having a hard time imagining keeping him locked up for two weeks. Seems cruel, but if its life saving there is no question in my mind its the right thing to do.

So sorry to hear Odin is having problems (and what a cute name). I watched the video that you linked to, and it actually looks very different from what our Castor experienced before he had his soft palate /elongated palate surgery when he was Odin's age. He would throw up white foam and get out of breath when playing or walking far, but we had no fainting, no pneumonia symptoms or anything like that.

Dogs can faint from excitement, vomiting and gagging/vomiting can be caused by indigestion - I read about a pup that fainted and they thought is was because he had swallowed some kind of chewing bone that he then tried to throw up. Could it be that Odin chewed on / ate anything that got stuck?

Tell Odin that Castor is thinking of him and we hope your fulball will soon be well again.

The links you’ve attached is not Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome/soft palate.

This is a stomach and/or same area issue. The dog in the link is trying to pump something out n nothing comes out but foam, gets weak etc...You can tell as the stomach is contracted. Was he checked for BLOATING? If you press on his stomach does he whine? Some won’t either.

Bloat usually comes on very quickly...

Act restless
Drool
Have a swollen stomach
Look anxious
Look at their stomach
Pace
Try to vomit, but nothing comes up
Stretch with their front half down and rear end up

Not to scare you but bloating is dangerous. Was he checked for that??
