Mabel went back to the bulldog specialist for a check-up for the first time since he released her from her brachycephalic surgery. It's been a year since he saw her. I don't think he recognized her as the same dog! :happy2:

He said her throat looks great, but he was very impressed with her coat and overall health. He wanted to know what meds she's on (we have a local vet who also sees her for routine stuff) and seemed shocked when I told him she only takes a joint supplement every morning. He commented on how good her skin looks--and even her little nose, now that we've started using Aquaphor on it. :jumpdance:

The only concerns we have now is the pads of her feet and a little tumor by one of her nipples. He showed me how to trim her pads (they have hyperkeratosis like her nose because of uneven wear) and said we're going to just watch the tumor. This girl's ears are always bothersome, but we're making progress on that front too. All in all, it was a great visit! I can't thank you all enough! You have helped me so much with this sweet little dog! I don't think I could have done it without you. :thanks: You all are AWESOME!

Thanks, ddnene! Hyperakeratosis is an overgrowth of hard, crusty skin that has to be removed. It can crack and bleed or become infected. Mabel's little nose was all crusty and HUGE. We started with the Biobalm that the vet gave us, but found that Mabel hated it (strong odor and tasted bad). It was good for making the excess skin dry up and flake off, but I was really worried about hurting her and picking the chunks off. Now, I only use it occasionally, but am using Aquaphor daily. It has softened her nose so much! I take a warm wet washcloth every morning and clean her eye boogies and wrinkles and then scrub her nose. The washcloth is usually black with chunks of dead skin--every morning. But her little nose is looking really good!

That sounds exactly like Roxie's nose… does it hurt to rub off the skin? I'm sure Rox will let me do it, but I don't want to hurt her :(

I think it depends on the underlying skin. It doesn't seem to bother her like it used to, but you really need to soften and loosen it up first.

Happy to hear Mabel is doing so well. Snout Soother works well on foot pads as well. Mushers Secret is another good one as well.
