Kidney Diet Question and Advice

I am looking for some assistance. I have a 5 years old English bulldog, Apollo and he is the love of my life. We got him as a baby from a breeder and he had a murmur which my husband had thought wasn't bad based on what breeder and their vet said. Long story short we kept him BC I fell in love with him and was scared to send him back to the breeder. He was diagnosed with VSD and mild pulmonic stenosis. We were told he would only live 1 year if that. But here we are.
Since the age of around 1 he was on heart meds, Spironolactone. We were just advised by his heart specialist to take him off this BC his renal panel came back showing a worsening of his kidney values. They advised putting him on a special diet (either Royal Canine renal support or Hill's KD) but we are hesitant BC he's been really healthy otherwise and he's been on a raw diet for awhile which he loves. His Urea nitrogen is a 43 (good range is 6-31) and Creatinine is a 1.7 (good range is 0.5 - 1.6). I am so scared after taking him off his heart meds and want to see if there is anything else I can do to reduce further damage to his kidney or find something that will help them. We just did another round of blood work and his levels increased by 1 point. We were advised again to change to a kidney diet and Royal Canin or Hill's? Any recommendations and thoughts on this? Thankfully he is not at a stage where he has really bad kidney disease. I just want him to live long and well and as comfortable and happy as possible.
Any advice or information is appreciated. We love our boy so much and want the best for him. Thank you for your time.

4. Provide a low-phosphorus diet

A low-phosphorous diet is also imperative when feeding a dog with kidney disease. Renal failure means they won't be able to process phosphorus properly in the kidneys. Lean meat is a good option, always in moderate quantities.
Remember that you should ask your vet what the correct amount of food is for your pet. Now that the basics are clear, put on your apron and let's prepare some homemade dog food for kidney disease.

Rice, turkey and beef recipe for dogs with kidney failure

The ingredients for this dog food recipe are:

• Rice
• Turkey meat
• Beef

Instructions

1. To cook the rice you need two cups of water for each cup of rice. The rice will take 20 minutes to cook.
2. While the rice is cooking, prepare the rest of the ingredients.
3. Clean the turkey meat thoroughly and cut into small pieces.
4. After the rice has boiled for ten minutes, add the turkey meat.
5. Once everything is cooked, drain the ingredients and allow it all to cool.
6. In another pan, bring water to a boil. Add the beef only once the water is boiling.
7. Cook the beef for around 5 minutes. You will know it is ready when it turns for red to brown.
8. Rinse the cooked beef in cold water and remove any white foam attached.
9. Chop the beef into small pieces and add it to the rice and turkey. >Carrots and green beans are good veggies.

And there you have it - a simple, homemade recipe for dogs with kidney disease. @helsonwheels may help you more with a raw diet, for the heart. From most all information, Hill's and Science diet are not good foods.(except the vets are paid to sell it.)

Thanks so much for your response and advice. I appreciate the recipe for homemade food for my boy. I have read bad things about both Royal and Hill's so I told his heart doctor I wasn't ready to make that change. My boy currently is on a premade frozen raw food (Primal Pronto Lamb). He loves this. He gets cooked string beans and carrots as well. I'm sure the will love the homemade food but I'm concerned about the rice BC he does get yeasty eating starchy foods.

Laura, whatever you do, DO NOT change the diet. He’s lived this far n wasn’t supposed to. Royal Canin or Hill will end his life sooner. A dog or cat with kidney issues needs to be on a 100% full raw diet even treats.

Look for the frozen green tripe at your pet store. Build up his immune systems stronger.

Hello, my dog is 12 and we have been struggling with the same diet/allergy issues. I put him on farmer dog fresh food in February 2022...which did wonders for his allergies and weight but we switched him to Hill RX Diet since it was too high in protein for his age last month due to his medication. He was recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure. It's only been a month and we are due to run labs to check his kidneys. I can post an update for you later if you are curious to compare even tho i know their age ranges are wide. Unfortunately we didnt diagnose his heart condition until age 12 but you are on the right track!

Have a question for you, were you feeding Hills in 2017-2019 ish? “If” you did, might explain why your dog has health issues. I’m n saying it caused by Hills but I sure wouldn’t give anything from Hills. I’m in the food industry n I know there’s still ongoing lawsuits with them cause of the excess vitamin D they added in their kibbles that killed dogs and/or cause numerous health problems in dogs. Simply Google it. Science Hill, Royal Canin n Purina, will totally not help any pet’s health. That’s my 2 cents on them 3 brands.
