Hi, you might have guessed I’m Donna and Freya is my girl.
She’s a 17 month old Olde Tyme English Bulldogge and the most beautiful girl.
Her first 9 months of her life was lived in a crate with people who assumed she’d come into season at six months old. She’s a pedigree who they paid almost £4k for thinking they could breed her a couple of times then get rid of her 🤬 They were a young couple working and socialising full time. Freya’s only outdoor experience was once or twice a day a retractable lead was trapped in the front door so she could toilet. By the time she got to 9 months she hadn’t come into season and being new dog owners they’d had enough and dropped her at a local rescue.
I’d decided due to my living circumstances and health conditions whilst I knew I wanted a bully I wanted one age 3+ somehow and I really can’t remember how I came across 9 month old Freya and I knew and I think she did we were each others! She came home with me had a couple of treats, a drink of water then slept for a couple of hours without sniffing around! And believe me she can sniff like no tomorrow!
She’s an amazing girl we have a dog trainer who says she’s one of the most intelligent dogs she’s ever had, dispelling the myth of bulldogs being dopey! She’s come such a long way but with other dogs she’s very reactive. She wants to play and is dog friendly but she hasn’t fully figured out dog body language so she goes full steam ahead! Unfortunately when the other dog says back off she doesn’t understand and jumps straight back in until it gets to the stage of a warning growl or a neck nip, then she immediately changes into attack mode! She also like a lot of bulldogs fixates easily so when she spots another dog from a distance she does that bully stare and unless I’m quick enough to distract her and keep her attention on me of course the other dog misinterprets her stare and goes on the offensive!
Since being spayed this has gotten worse but we are working on it, she’s a good dog and we will get there.
Sorry this ended up such a long post but with bully’s being such a stigmatised breed it’s really difficult to talk to people.

Welcome to EBN…. Sounds like a few other female bulldogs we’ve known!

My female was very similar… she ended up being a 9 year training session; learned so so much from her and she was a great teacher. She never got along with any dogs but she adored puppies and children. We brought in a puppy and she took right to him. Any other dog she was 100% in fight/defensive mode

Sounds a lot like Freya! Freya is great with children she loves them, older children she will get giddy and jump up but she’s learning. Toddlers like my grandchildren she has never once jumped or anyone vulnerable. It’s funny watching her play with my grandchildren age 5 and 3 she plays chase and tig with them and just trots along behind them 😂
The only dog so far who can correct her when she crosses boundaries is our trainers Molly, she is a cockapoo but is the ultra matriarch! When Freya doesn’t take notice of the more friendly warnings Molly lets her know in no uncertain terms that Freya is NOT the boss and she will do what she’s told. Freya could make mincemeat out of her but she always does as she’s told! It’s actually quite funny to see.
