We recently got a puppy two months ago. She is now 4 1/2 months old and we have been dealing with chronic on and off loose stool at night with her. She is currently on what the breeder had her on which is the Purina pro puppy, chicken and rice formula. We’ve noticed she has had loose stool almost every week at night and we’ve been having to take her out multiple times a night. We recently started adding a small amount of pumpkin purĆ©e to her meal which has shown improvements. I’m wondering if the food itself contains something that her stomach doesn’t agree with and if I should switch her onto something else? She also has some pretty serious tear stains that we clean every day and I’m starting to wonder if maybe there’s something she could be allergic to that she’s eating. Our vet also did two stool samples and they both came back fine, so we can rule parasites out.
If anyone else has experienced something like this or has recommendations on, switching her to a different diet, please let me know!

Anything from Purina, Royal Canin, Science Hill, Iams are ALL full of fillers and grains. RC was caught putting feathers at one time as fillers. People seriously need to stay away from them brands. Raw diet is best but not for everyone. Higher quality kibbles are Zignature, Fromm, Acana. Look for one protein bag. Once bag is finished, do another protein and so on. Keep the pumpkin going. Do your transition if it’s kibble to kibble. There is numerous information on here about food issues. 75% of the time it’s related to the brands I’ve mentioned. Keep us posted šŸ‘

Thank you! Is OpenFarms considered a decent brand? I was looking into trying their Chicken/Salmon puppy kibble for her.

Very good brand!

Bear in mind, all puppy food is higher in calories as it’s calculated for puppy stages. Keep an eye on her weight.

Also raw marrow bones will keep all pups busy while keeping a healthy gut flora/microbe. And away from teething on furniture and our hands 😁

Helene has offered good advice. Keep in mind that the most common reason for loose stool in puppies is overfeeding. If the loose stool continues and worms have been eliminated as a cause, try dialing back the food 25%. You should see a difference in the stool within 2 days.

Open farm , Zingnature are two good options but I’m all for raw or gently cooked if you can do either of those
