Hi Iā€™m really going through it over here. So about 2 weeks ago I heard Rico paw his left eye in the middle of the night and it was red and the third eyelid raised. I contacted the vet right away and they didnā€™t see any scratches and suggested he had Hornerā€™s syndrome. We came home and it seemed to improve, he was only squinting in the evening a bit and the third eyelid wasnā€™t as raised as before. Then a few days later it seemed to take a turn. The eye looked red again, more squinting and the third eyelid was still visible. I took him back to the vet on Wednesday and they said they would have to sedate him to look at his eye as he was not letting them touch it, he was being snappy. He has always been this way at the vet. I was so worried about sedation but felt I had to check his eye. So they sedated him, did a stain test and pressure test in both eyes. They also gave his ears a good flush or cleaning. They said there was a tiny ulcer on the left eye, the size of a pin needle and that it should heal on its own because it was so tiny. When I picked him up he was really drowsy and both eyes were red and running with dye. He still opened them tho. He had a terrible night crying and he wasnā€™t peeing normally. He didnā€™t eat or drink until the next morning. Then I noticed the left eye, the one that had the original problem wasnā€™t even opening anymore, and now the right eye had a raised third eyelid and was squinting. He also began having issues peeing. He would stand to pee for a long time with nothing coming out and when it finally did it was dribbling. I donā€™t know if he is having an adverse reaction or what. I am devastated. I am so scared for him. Iā€™m scared he will go blind or lose his eyes. Please pray for him. I feel like Iā€™m losing it over here, and Iā€™m blaming myself for taking him to the vet and sedating him when it wasnā€™t that bad. He went in with the left eye slightly squinting on and off and now both eyes are closed, with the right only slightly opening and red.

Sorry to hear about Rico. I am not a veterinary ophthalmologist but, I recommend you you take Rico to see one. Ulcers on the eye are very painful as Jewel and Bentley (God rest their souls) had them and were treated. As far as Rico's urinary issues, I do not know if they are related as I am not a vet.

I most certainly will pray for Rico and you and your family as well.

Here is an article from PetMD on eyes with symptoms: https://www.petmd.com/dog/general-health/evr_dg_eye_problems_in_dogs

Sorry to hear you and Rico are going thru this.

I would get his eyes checked by a eye specialist vet.

Iā€™m not a vet, but I would also recommend you take a urine sample to your vet to check for urinary crystals or stones cause that can definitely make them unable to pee and if they do its very little and is painful for them.

Didnā€™t he have Struvite crystals not too long ago in your last thread? Did you switch his food and give him the Thrive Bladder supplement??? If the crystals didnā€™t go away and now he is unable to pee much, I would have him checked for struvite stone(the struvite crystals will clump up and form a stone causing blockage).

my thoughts and prayers are with you. Hopefully they can get him better soon.

Sending healing prayers to Rico. I agree with Roger... get to an eye specialist. Find a pet ER in your area

I agree on a second opinion as eye issues can turn bad if not treated properly. My French bulldog has a really bad corneal ulcer a few months ago where even my vet was pretty concerned. But we tried a triple antibiotic ointment for a week and then went back for a recheck and to our surprise, it started to heal. She had me continue the ointment for 2 more weeks with continued improvement. He does have a tiny dot on his eye which is a scar but it did completely heal.

@Ricothebully How is Rico doing today...any better/worse? Please keep us updated. Thanx!
Well I have been giving him the antibiotic drops Tobrex in his eye 3/day as prescribed since last Friday. I donā€™t see much of an improvement. He still holds it closed most of the time, squints, and the third eyelid is still raised. Not sure how long before I should see improvement. He keeps breaking his cone too, so he can run at his eye. Iā€™m having a hard time.

He did have struvite crystals. I had an X-ray done and it was clear. He is peeing better now, so Iā€™m not sure if it was a reaction from the sedation. He seemed to have a really hard time recovering from it. Itā€™s like he went in to the vet and came out worse. I tried the natureā€™s logic and he couldnā€™t stomach it he kept throwing up. I did give him the thrive supplement tho. Right now Iā€™m just a bag of stressšŸ˜©.

Thank you for the update. Did you see an Vet Ophthalmologist or was this your regular vet? I really sympathize with you and Rico being stressed and in discomfort. The eye drops Trobex (aka Tobramycin) are for a bacterial infections of the eye and will not treat viral conditions. An Ophthalmologist would be better suited for dealing with Rico's eye condition.

We are glad to hear the issue in man-land is better. That is some relief. Did the vet recommend a diet to help/lower the crystals? Usually they do.

Did the vet even say when to come back if the problem is not resolved? I'd go back ASAP to the vet since there is no improvement after 5 days of treatment (last Friday to today). I realize the conditions are ripe for stress. Just hang in there. Prayers and positive vibes are being sent your way as well as Rico's.

Please give us updates on Rico. Thanx! RJ

If those eye drops wouldā€™ve helped, you shouldā€™ve already seen improvement by now, when my dog had to use those drops it was day 2-3 sometimes 4 days max to see some improvement depending on the issue.

If this were my dog, I would get him checked for a struvite stone on X-ray, I know you said they did x ray when they diagnosed the crystals, but since itā€™s been more than a month from when you asked about struvite crystals in your other thread, and if they arenā€™t gone yet, they could have already formed a stone. At least he is peeing better now.

At least you tried a different food for the crystals, itā€™s frustrating when you finally find something but they donā€™t like it or tolerate it.

I would recommend taking him to a eye specialist to see if they can figure out what a wrong.

Sending my thoughts and hoping he will heal soon. I know it can be stressful, hopefully things improve soon for both of you.

I know that there are drops that can help an ulcer as well as drops that can make is quite a bit worse; we have had so many different types of eye drops I learned this when I tried the wrong one on Sophie and THEN took her to the vet and they told me that I was using the one you should NOT use with an ulcer. I felt awful. I know they cause a great deal of pain. :(

If you can get her to an eye specialist, that is the best course of action. Needless to say, even a regular vet should also give her something for pain!

So I went back to the vet yesterday and did another X-ray and itā€™s still clear. I also dropped off a urine sample. I have to wait for the results.

The vet looked at his eye and it seems that the ulcer got a little bigger. Rico managed to break his cone and rub his eye on Sunday so I guess thatā€™s when he did that. They said he also has Hornerā€™s syndrome which is why his third eyelid was raised causing him to paw at his eye in the first place, causing this whole thing. They told me to continue the Tobrex until Monday and keep the cone on him at all times, and update them on Monday. Iā€™m starting to worry that maybe he is having a reaction to the Tobrex. He seems to be really irritated after I apply it. He goes crazy trying to get at his eye. Then he just keeps it closed. I asked the vet if he could have a reaction to it and they said itā€™s highly unlikely and to continue using it because they donā€™t want bacteria to get to the ulcer to make it worse. I hate seeing him like this. I recently lost my job and the financial part of this is taking a toll. Iā€™m not sure if I will be able to afford an ophthalmologist at this point. Iā€™m trying. Weā€™ve been going through a lot with him this past year. Iā€™m just thinking that if he made the ulcer a little bigger by rubbing it on Sunday, shouldnā€™t I still see a difference by now?

Glad no urine stone blockage! Hopefully the crystals are gone, keep us updated on the results.

Poor Rico, itā€™s horrible seeing them uncomfortable and his eye is worse.

He could be allergic to the drops possibly, or it could be painful for the dog if the drops are making it worse or are irritating his already irritated eye.

I understand your frustration, and not being able to see a eye specialist due to $.

Yes I agree, I think you should already see a difference by now for the drops.

Hope things improve for both of you.

Please keep us updated on the results.

Can you ask the vet about triple antibiotic ointment? Thatā€™s what I used on Jax for his ulcer. Tobramycin usually isnā€™t used on ulcers.

The local pet stores might carry an inflatable collar you could try instead of a cone
