Cherry Eye

Frank just turned 8 months old and has had issues with cherry eye since he was a baby. Our other bulldog never had this problem, so I did some research and have been able to massage this back into place without issue every time. When I mentioned this to his vet, she feels he should have surgery to fix this issue when he goes in to be neutered.

Iā€™m not sure I agree itā€™s necessary right now and if it is, I definitely would want surgery done at an office that has a lot of experience even if this means we need to travel.

Her rationale is that he would only need anesthesia once, which makes sense, but is it really necessary right now when itā€™s been easily rectified?

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

I have no experience with cherry eye but someone will come along that does! Welcome to EBN!

IMO as long as you can massage it in there is no need for surgery. Just keep the eye well lubricated. He is still young and his head is developing. No need for unnecessary operations even for bulldogs. If you opt for the surgery do not let them take the gland away. That can lead to dry eye, which is way worse.

That was my thought as well! Thank you! Iā€™m hoping that he will outgrow it.

My first English bulldog had cherry eye in one eye and my vet recommended to do both eyes and the neutered take advantage of the anesthesia all at once. He recommended to do both in case in the future the other eye would pop out. I also tried massaging it back in place, but 2 days later I woke up and it was hanging out again. After the surgery he never had cherry eye again and no dry eyes.

Nyala had a cherry eye as a pup. I massage it in n it would come out again when she played or run. I waited till she was scheduled to be spayed months later. Vet only did one stitch n no need to touch the gland as mentioned.

Levi had cherry eye at 10 months,, I rolled the dice and had my vet ā€œsnipā€ it out instead of doing the tuck surgery,,, he said I could have dry eye issues with him later on,, nope,, he is doing great with 0 issues and yes I would have the same procedure done again if I had to do it all over

For $350?...that wouldn't cover the general anesthesia. I would run(not walk) from a Vet that says $175 per eye. We typically pay about $1200 for an eye if memory serves...by an eye specialist. Our Eye specialist is very skilled and familiar with GA and Bulldogs. We've yet to have a tuck fail. That's a huge plus!

Could you please let me know how where you find for 1200?
I called the doctor my dog's vet recommended and he charged 4k for 1 eye only.

We recently had Dr Andrew Berdoulay(Newport News , VA) do bilateral Cherry eye and Entropion(upper and lower lids) repair on one of our rescues. The surgery was perfect, as usual. They usually charge about $2200 plus follow up but our rescue discount brought it down to $1800 + follow up. This is the most reasonable surgery pricing weā€™ve ever experienced. The quality of care cannot be beat. Weā€™re lucky to have this Top Notch surgery center available to us.
