Help Needed! Bulldog still crackly 2 months after KC

Hi new member here and I joined really to seek some advice.
I have a 17 weeks old puppy and after a couple of days of having him we found out he had kennel cough (caught it from the breeders) his symptoms were always hacking trying to clear his throat, wet nose and sounding crackly. After spending the night at the emergency vets they prescribed him with some antibiotics for kennel cough. His symptoms got much better and the coughing/hacking all the time has stopped however 2 months on and he is still on antibiotics (which we only found out the other day also treats pneumonia) after a few check ups. He still sounds a bit crackly which only tends to happen in the morning or at night and he always trying to bring up phlegm but always ends up swallowing it he is his happy and energetic self and has always had his appetite.
I was just looking for some advice is this normal for a puppy to take this long to get over kennel cough or is it something else?

Hello and welcome to EBN! That seems a long time for kennel cough and antibiotics. but as long as he is eating, acting normal is a good sigh.

have you had the vet recheck him?

Hi thank you and yes he was checked again last Tuesday she has gave him another 2 weeks worth of antibiotics but has upped the dosage as he wasn’t having the correct amount. She has said if we’re still not happy in 2 weeks then they will x-ray him but the thought of him having to be put out for it terrifies me

give him a steam bath or if you have a vaporizer place it next/near him at night to help clear the chest

X-ray should be able to be done with sedation over full anesthesia.

Our puppy has had multiple X-rays over the last 6 months and has never been put under or sedated.

Ah really? I’m not sure why my vet has mentioned putting him under then. To be honest I think we are going to find an Bulldog specialist to have a proper look over him.

Unfortunately, our puppy had pneumonia 4 times in 5 months and we’ve had X-rays done multiple times between two different vets. There’s no reason to put under or sedate for X-rays. What we did learn is it can take a long time for a bulldog to fully recover from pneumonia. In hindsight, he probably never fully recovered the first time and it kept recurring. We should have continued antibiotics until his X-rays showed clear lungs and/or his white blood cell count was normal.

X-ray should be able to be done with sedation over full anesthesia.

Don't let the vet use injectable anesthetics, it killed my 2 years old English Bulldog. Gas inhalation anesthetics is the best.

About a month ish ago, Jake swallowed part of a bone from a raw joint. I never ever give joints to any dogs. Husband‘s fault…Didn’t know I use the joints for my bone broth n not for dogs. don’t ask Anyhooo, he stopped pooping for 6 days n had an X-ray done. Never got sedated either n my vet knows Jake has anxiety. Talk to your vet as there is no reason to sedate them for an X-ray. Always ask questions. Especially if you’re not comfortable.
