I had issues like that with my female, and I used the bell method... I put a bell on a long string and places it on the doorknob. Whenever she would go out to go potty I would ring the bell when I opened the door... she finally realized to go out she would ring the bell. Sometimes potty training takes longer... they seem to regress for a period of time, just be consistent and hopefully they will get it. You might want to try giving them a small treat when they go potty as an incentive to make a better choice!!!
