Entropian?!?!

Ok so I am discovering more and more issues, as the hours go by. While I was cleaning Tysons eyes tonight I noticed his bottom eyelids roll in. I think this is probably the cause of his eye problems. I am not a vet by any means , but it's pretty noticable. I'm going to try to get him into the vet tomorrow. I know that many of you have experience with this. Is surgery the only option. Is it the best option? He is already 7 and I worry about surgery for him considering he is over weight, but I don't want him to suffer either.

Also I am damn mad (pardon my language) that the family who claimed to love him oh so much didn't have him seen for any of this.Or if they did their vet didn't seem to do anything. I may sound like a horrible person but it kind of sucks that I wasn't even informed of any of this before hand. I know bully health care cost money . I'm not saying that that will prohibit me but it would have been nice to know I was going to need to shell out a grand or so in the first 72 hours I had him. Dozer had health insurance and It won't cover any issues Tyson currently has. Also I just paid a huge vet bill for for Dozer and am waiting ot see what will and won't be reimbursed. Does anyone know approx how much the surgery costs if he needs it? PLease don't think that I am saying that money is more inportant than Tyson, it isn't. It's just from what I was told, he was very healthy in terms of a bully anyway . I am scared at the prospect of him having surgery. I can't emotionally handle a very sick or dying bully again so soon. I know this is a risk you always take, but come on.

We did entropion surgery for Chunk - I paid a pretty penny but I went to an eye specialist. Plus, things are just more expensive here in jersey. I've heard people say it cost them $300-400. We paid more than twice that but I'm so glad I did it. Now, I've also heard that some dogs respond to food changes and it helps this. Basically, if they are allergic to their food, it could make their eyes swollen and cause it. Just a thought. Good luck and if you have any questions about the entropion let me know!!!

Well lets see what the vet says. I imagine it would be wise to wait on surgeries till he gets healthy on the inside first. We all know about good food can make a lot of difference. You say he needs to lose some pounds. You still don't know if he has any allergies.

Wilson had Entropian surgery on both eyes before he turned a year old $800. Wilson has had an ulcer on the same eye twice. He's had cherry eye. We've been battling his allergies. Sometimes we win for a while and sometimes not. I've had him most of his life and even with my loving care "stuff" still happened, so no there is no guarantee of a healthy dog but we've rolled with the punches. My "second opinion" vet says he has distichia on his lower lids and recomends lasering them off but I prefer to manage with drops and ointment as even lasering doesn't guarantee that those lashes won't grow back. Wilson is 3 years old now and I hope he manages to live to a ripe old age, in the meantime we are doing the best we can like everyone else.

So far with Gracie her vet has recommended we try drops before surgery, and we have seen amazing improvement in the redness in her eye with this new ointment. Optimmune is the name of it. Oh, this is for dry eye, but he also said she had entropian, but that is better too now.

I'm sorry I came across sounding so awful. I just want him to be ok. I had just wiped his eyes which he hates but they are full of yellow gunk. The poor guy rubs his face on his bed trying to make his eyes feel better on and off all day. Between that and the hair loss it just scares me. A friend of mine told me yesterday that her golden started losing hair like that and it was due to cancer! I doubt this is the case with Tyson but having just lost Dozer these things make me panic more than I really should. The only thought in the back of my mind was great I'm going to lose you too. I am taking him to the vet and we will see what he says

aw hon hugs to you from sarah and me. i know its hard but dont think the worst. a vet visit is in order with any new dog and im thinking a good food and maybe some drops and everything will be fine. i have no experience with eye issues thank goodness but just wanted to give you well wishes and hugs and encouragement as i know you have been through alot. and its ok to rant ive done it im sure we all have from time to time.

[MENTION=1665]dozersmama[/MENTION] I'm sorry to hear about Dozer's eye. I'm fairly new here and do not know everyone's pet yet. Did you say he is 7 months old.?

My Jack turned 9 months old this week and while at the vet last week, he mentioned Jack's lower eyelids did roll in a little but not to worry about it for now since his head was sure to grow bigger.. He told me once the head grows a bit the skin below his eyelid may stretch and prevent the "rolling in" of the lower eyelid...

So if Dozer is 7 months old, I wouldnt worry too much about it yet.......

I'd be beyond ticked off if I was you... as my b/f says 'I'd be going Philly on them' right about now. Rant/vent all you need to - that is why we are here.. to help.

When you go to the vet -- ask for a full allergy blood screen.. it will answer a lot of questions and help in the long run. Good luck today and keep us posted.

wow.. I really feel for you.. try to relax ( thats the pot calling the kettle black ) and take one day at a time.. i think you should just wait to see what the vet says.. Duke had horrible entropian and distachis ( totally hacked spelling ) its when their lashes grow inward. he had both eyes done for $3000!!! yes you read it right BUT he did not have the symptoms you are describing... so just see what they say .. also there are many options before surgery has to be done.. please please update us..and its good to vent

Good luck at the vets today, we are hoping for good news, and can't wait to here the out come, hopefully you can use the drops or ointment for his eyes. Hugs to you and Tyson from all the gang here.

I also see an eye specialist with Lucy. She had a surgery for distichiasis (like Duke) that is a similar surgery (lid correction) to entropian. Now, to ease your mind--Lucy still has a slight entropian and an ectropian on each eye post surgery. We are keeping an eye on it and we will not move forward with surgical intervention unless she starts to have problems. As long as a dog isn't getting corneal abrasions or re occuring eye ulcers you don't always have to correct every entropian.

Also--like others mentioned cost can range from hundreds to thousands depending who performs the surgery. We opted for the eye specailist to do it. I think it was around $1500 when it was all said and done. My vet probably could have does the same procedure for a few hundred. Once you get him evaluated you will have a baseline--then you an start working on a plan to get him healthy!
