Hello, my name is Jen. My husband and I got our sweet English Bulldog Stella from a responsible good breeder in our area in February at the age of 9 weeks. Her birthday is November 28, 2010.
She is scheduled to be spayed tomorrow and I feel really nervous. Is she old enough? (Just over 8 months). I just read Laura's post about her Lola and the reaction to the anesthesia and now I am really concerned. Can anyone offer some advice? Should I wait? Stella is our baby and we love her more than I ever thought possible. The thought of something bad happening is horrifying.

Hi and welcome! Stella's so pretty! Does she have 1 blue eye or are both blue? We have a member here who has a bully here with one blue eye.

8 months is a good age for spaying. Unfortunately, instances such as what Lola went through do happen but the chances are small. Do you know what anesthesia your vet is going to use? It's recommended that they use isofluorane gas. That's all I know about surgeries. Hopefully someone here will share their insight and experience.

Welcome Jen and Stella!

She's sticking her tongue out at me with that crazy look in her eyes! :lmao:

English Bulldogs can go into their heat cycle between 6 and 11 months of age. It is usually recommended to get them spayed before they go through their first heat cycle, although you'll find some who would advice to do it after their first heat. Anyway, 6 months is the most commonly recommended spaying age, so your dog is definitely old enough.

The risks of surgical death or complications with anesthesia are greater when the dog is very young - this usually means before 3 months of age. In any case, 8 months is definitely old enough to spay your dog. A vet would normally not perform the procedure unless he deems it safe, so you should be okay.

Hope this helps.

Penny is getting spayed tomorrow as well. I'm so nervous!

Just wanted to wish you good luck! I've also heard that iso is the safest anesthesia.

Welcome to the boards. Unfortunately any surgery for these short nose pups is scary. Do you have a good bully vet I hope? My only advise would be to NOT have it done by just any vet because short nose dogs need special care and not every vet knows this. If you do have a good bully vet then you should be ok but as in Lola's case that isnt always so. Scary! It is rare tho. Your girl is beautiful by the way I LOVE that pic!

savemejeebus, thank you for the tip re: the iso gas. I will check and make sure that is what they are using. Stella has one blue eye and one brown. It makes her extra special :D

anatess, thank you for the information! Stella often has her tongue sticking out!:lmao:We think it's beyond cute.

MissPennyLue Good luck to you as well. I will let you all know tomorrow how it goes.

I think we will be bringing her home tomorrow evening opposed to them keeping her overnight. I would rather Stella be comfortable and safe in her own crate at home so we can check on her. I don't think they keep staff overnight at our animal hospital. I will ask the vet for things we need to look for. I know she is not supposed to do any running or jumping for several days.

For other female bully owners here that have had their girl spayed - any tips on how to keep her comfortable once she is home, recovery time etc?

thank you @ cali~jenn :D
Our vet has many bulldog patients. Our breeder thinks highly of the vet and vice versa. My brother worked at this animal hospital for many years and I feel confident with them, I just can't help but worry.

Stella is gorgeous! Our vet is a Bullie vet...he even has a Bulldog mascot who is at work with him everyday, Butter Bean is his name! Doc Collinsworth recommends 6 months of age for spay/neuter. He uses ISO and doesn't pull the tube from the Bullie's throat until they are out from under the ISO. He gets them up and pretty much sitting before he pulls the tube out...just another safety precaution for brachycephalic (short nosed) breeds. Stella will be fine...we've had all our dogs spayed and neutered. By the way, one thing we do before ANY surgery is have our vet do a blood test just to make sure all the counts are within normal ranges...it doesn't hurt to make sure there's nothing starting up or going on with your baby's system. Good luck, sweetie!

Your bully is beautiful. It's rare for bad reactions now days. It used to be more common. Good Luck to both of you, little mommy. Keep me posted.

Rex just got neutered last monday .. I opted to wait till he was a year old .. I was a nervous wreck .. I actually kept going back in the vets office to change my mind .. But im glad i got it over with and he is fine slept that night like a baby and was back to his wild self that morning .. The reason i waited till a year is because he is a male and have read alot of stuff on the subject but 8 months is a good time to do it for a female .. And the younger the better as far as anesthesia .. She will be fine .. Your vet wouldnt do it if they didnt think she can handle it
