Maybe I came off wrong in my original post and made Truman's breeder sound more callous than he ever was.

I don't think the breeder did anything particularly cruel in this case - I think it's more of an issue of nature being cruel because, at this point, there is a very good possibility we might have to euthanize Truman. I assume when you breed any kind of dog, you see puppies that have problems and you have to make decisions regarding quality of life no matter how responsible you are with your care.

I contacted the breeder after our visit to the ER vet visit. The news there was, of course, not good and the x rays seemed to corroborate serious hip problem. We did sign a contract and received a health guarantee but of course, he cannot "guarantee" a healthy puppy but guarantee us that if the puppy is terminally sick or has a major issue that will affect his quality of life, we can get a new puppy. He understood that there was no way we wanted a new puppy and there was no way we wanted to bring Truman back - whether or not he survives this - because we love him. The breeder cannot take this away from us and he knows that and we know that. Based on the information I gave him, I believe he thought euthanizing was the most humane option for Truman and was willing to do it for us, if we wanted but was willing to return our money even though nothing in the contract specified we were entitled to that at all.

Since the breeder cannot cure Truman, I don't know what more he could've done than to give us our money back to help see if there's anything can be done with the understanding that we will not keep him alive if his quality of life will never be good.

I hope that makes more sense. Truman's breeder was very emotional and very, very apologetic for the heartache he knows this is causing.

As for Truman, he continues to eat and drink and play as best he can...we are praying for any sign of improvement or functionality on his right leg so we can retain hope. We are planning on dealing with the orthopedic specialist exclusively from this point since she had the most positive prognosis with the understanding that Truman's quality of life is our only priority.

Thanks for all the concern - I appreciate all the support.

And just for some levity, here is a pic from today of Truman and his big brother, Linus - my four year old bulldog and the light of my life. He is quite a character and a wonderful friend. Not to mention also incredibly cute!

Thank you for posting that. I love the photo as well, your Linus is so very handsome! They are both so wonderful! I sure hope Truman gets through this, and he is very lucky that YOU love him so much and are willing to go the extra mile for him.

I second that. Linus is cute and I LOVE his ears! Something about speckeled ears gets me everytime! ;)

I am so glad to hear he wasn't so cold about it. When I first read the post before that it made me so sad. I hope you can find the right treatment for Truman so he can live comfortably. Stay strong! He is lucky to have you!

Thank you, thank you for all the well wishes and compliments on Linus! He does have the cutest polka dotted ears (and tummy) - fitting since his biological momma's name was "Dotty!" He is a perfect mix between a bulldog and a pig - he even snorts before he gets his dinner. ( :

A little Truman update, he is doing okay. He is not putting any weight on the leg or showing any signs of improvement. I sent the x rays from the bulldog vet to the orthopedic surgeon and she did not see anything new she didn't see before...still no idea what is causing Truman THAT kind of pain. He is staying comfy and we're trying to get him to try to move around a little to see if he can put anything on it since a little functionality would go a long way at this point. We've made another appointment for Monday morning with the orthopedic surgeon. We know this is a very important appointment since there is concern regarding the development of his other bones and muscles since he can't walk.

So trying to stay positive...but it's hard.

Thanks Lisa - I see you're from Buffalo, NY. Me too! I was born and lived in Kenmore for 23 years until I moved to go to grad school.

A bit of good news, Truman was much more mobile this evening than he's been since Saturday. He actually trotted (limping a bit) across the kitchen floor to the water bowl and to the door after he went to the bathroom.

I tried exercising him a bit in the pool today and also putting a heating pad on his hip, so maybe that helped a little...hoping for more improvement by Monday's return to the orthopedic surgeon.

So happy he's doing a bit better! Kenmore?!.. small world! I think I am one of the few "east coasters" on here.. LOL :D

They did not x ray the paw - just the pelvis and legs. They did physically check his paw without any sign of pain.

He's doing good again today. We took him off the anti-inflammatory and he's playing and walking and running - all with a limp and he sits when he's one spot for more than a few seconds - but he's looking a lot better.

We're going to call the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow and let them know about his progress and see if we should wait a few days or come in tomorrow as planned.

More good news on Truman...he made such great strides over the weekend that the orthopedic surgeon recommended to give it another week to see if he improves even more. He's still limping and his hind legs seem weak but he's walking, running, playing and being a little trouble maker! All good signs.

Thanks again for all the support!
