tail amputation cost

I adopted (low cost) an eb that i see now needs the surgery.

It sounds like the vet that gave the diagnosis would cost about 700. But this vet is two hours away from me. It's in the town where the dog lived.

Anybody in Tucson or around southern AZ know of a general practitioner who would do it for around that price?

Ohhhh..make sure you have an experienced person do this. To do a tail amp, you are messing with the spine. The tail is part of the vertebrae....and by closing up the tail pocket you have to amputate the tail and remove part of the tail vertebrae. I would make ABSOLUTELY SURE the person who is doing this is experienced with 1) bulldogs and anesthesia 2)tail amps

This is a complicated surgery and the vet you choose should be more that a "general" vet.

But i'm comfortable with general vets on this. They know about the spine also, i figure - LOL.

This must be a simple procedure since the cost is so low. A specialist would charge 3000 probably - they have overhead to cover.

Specialists are reserved for the more complicated surgeries (in my mind). I've gone to gp's that send you to specialists for the simplest procedures.

Like entropion, for instance.

Knowing about the spine and doing surgery around the spine are different. If you are comfortable...that's great. But the majority of the people on this site will warn you about handing your bulldog over to a vet who doesn't know about bulldogs. Putting one of these guys under is a job in itself. My bulldog Vegas had his tail amputated a few years ago.

I'm with [MENTION=572]Libra926[/MENTION] on this.. Due to the "flat snout" there are many breathing challenges that a vet and bulldog might have to deal with.
Personally I would not just take any vet for this, I would ask many questions before I would agree to the procedure and who I would hire to do it.

well, it turns out that that estimate i got was totally low. The vet was a gp but the surgery would cost 2K. The labor cost would be 1K due to time.

I'm not ruling it out but will get a second opinion/estimate in Tucson where the clinic is recommended by bulldog owners.

I would check and see if dr ferguson at old pueblo veterinary clinic does this procedure. Dr warfield at valley animal hospital but only dr warfield, east side spay and neuter clinic there is a lady there who specializes in bulldogs but not sure if she does tail amps. She has bulldogs herself. Otherwise there is a mobile vet, dr Christo, I think he would be a good one to see if it is even needed or not, but I am sure he cannot perform the surgery if so.
